Official Mortal Kombat Film In The Works

Sometimes showing a little initiative pays off. After releasing a fan trailer for a Mortal Kombat film reboot, director Kevin Tancharoen was handed the reins of a nine-part web series based on the infamous fighting series. Today comes news that the MK web series has placed Tancharoen in the director's chair for a new Mortal Kombat movie, being made under Warner Bros.' own New Line Cinema label.

The L.A. Times is reporting that New Line is planning to produce the film next year with a tentative 2013 release date. Tancharoen stated that the movie will continue his vision of a more realistic take on the Mortal Kombat universe, though hasn't said if any of the actors from the web series will be reprising their roles, including Jeri Ryan, who played Sonya in the original fan trailer as "a favor to a friend."

I didn't watch the web series, but as long as the film has the iconic theme song from the original Mortal Kombat film, I'll be happy.

  • I hope the characters actually look the way they do in the game in this movie. I hate seeing Baraka look like a deformed Jamaican Warf. It takes away a great deal of authenticity.
  • MORRRTALLLL KOMBAAAAAAT! oh please use the same song! Greatest opening 3 seconds to a movie ever
  • LOL THIS SH** AGAIN
  • Daymit...... better not turn out like the other ones
  • Im glad they finally gave Kevin a shot at doing this right.

  • anyone think this going to suck? not to prejudge but the last one wasnt all that great. movies based on games never grab any attention or mange to be more than average at the box office...
  • I'm optimistic because I don't think that its humanly possible to make a worse movie than Mortal Kombat Annihilation.
  • The only thing I liked about the first Mortal Kombat movie has to be that theme song. I'm not expecting the movie to be wonderful but from being a Mortal Kombat fan since MK1 I feel obligated to be pumped for the movie. Boy do I hope it doesn't blow!

  • I like his web series, it was a really interesting take on MK. I wonder if the movie will continue the web series or will be something brand new.

  • Perfect tag for this article. It BETTER have that same amazing theme song!

  • I hope Sonya Blade takes the place of Shao Khan finally. It's been a long time coming. The Mortal Kombat world needs some spice in it and I think a team up with Sonya Blade and Jonny Cage is just what it needs. The rest of the characters are just lame IMO. That's just me. And the rest of the internet.
  • Honestly? Ever since the abomination that was the Final Fantasy movie, no one has watched a video game movie for any reason but to be ironic.
  • THIS IS A GREAT IDEA. OH, AND MORE CAPS, SO YOU KNOW I MEAN BUSINESS, SON.
  • While I'm not crapping on this yet, I still would love to see some other game franchises get chances at being movies. Zelda would make a great movie in the right hands. Mega Man could make a cool movie (there was a fan-made trailer on Youtube that someone made as a film school project or something). Halo too. Don't know why any of those have been given a shot seeing as how Hollywood can't seem to come up with original ideas themselves.
  • Jeff, go watch the web series and the Rebirth-Trailer, they are awesome. Finally, he gets to make a movie, looking forward to it.
  • i never checked out the web show, but i would love another movie

  • I liked the web series and i loved the rebirth trailer :)

  • I liked the web series and i loved the rebirth trailer :)
  • I hope that the characters are the same from the video game.

  • Who didn't see this coming? I have a feeling a bunch of hollywood pricks are gonna come in and ruin the project with recast and terrible plot ideas to try and "appeal" to younger audience.
