Marvel-Themed Puzzle Quest Game Coming Tomorrow

by Jeff Cork on Oct 02, 2013 at 03:54 AM

It's hard to believe, but it's been more than six years since the first Puzzle Quest game was released. The popular puzzle/RPG spawned a sequel and a spinoff, and now it's making its heroic return with Marvel Puzzle Quest: Dark Reign.

According to a tweet from Marvel Digital Media's Ryan Penagos, the game is due out tomorrow on both iOS and Android devices. As comics site Comic Book Resources points out, the game's name could be referring to a post Secret Invasion timeline, in which the bad guys took charge.

Regardless of the story or setting, it's likely that it'll follow the core tenets of the original games. In those installments, players took on enemies in turn-based, match-three battles. You could spend your in-game currency on gear and powers to make your character even more powerful. We'll have to wait to see how this works in Dark Reign, but the wait won't be long.

Our Take
In previous Puzzle Quest games, you developed a single hero over the course of an adventure. Will players have to manage a larger roster this time around? More to the point, will players have to dig into their wallets if the game does support a large cast of heroes? In the same vein, are resources going to be tuned to encourage microtransactions? One of the criticisms we had about previous Puzzle Quest games centered on its easy endgame content. Perhaps we'll be paying for those words. We'll know for sure tomorrow.
