Tomorrow Will Bring An 'Exciting' LittleBigPlanet Announcement

by Mike Futter on Aug 12, 2013 at 05:07 PM

Media Molecule has been hard at work on Tearaway (coming November 22), leaving many to wonder where that left Sony's imagination-fueled LittleBigPlanet series. We might know the answer to that very soon, according to a tweet from the franchise's official account.

While rumors have been swirling for months about who might be developing the next title in the series, it seems like an obvious move to introduce a new version. The franchise has had two PlayStation 3 appearances and a handheld showing each on the PSP and the Vita.

Media Molecule has previously worked with United Front Games (LittleBigPlanet Karting), Double Eleven, Tarsier Studios, Sony XDev Europe (LittleBigPlanet Vita), and Cambridge Studio (LittleBigPlanet for PSP). In other words, there are plenty of studios that could be working on LittleBigPlanet 3 right now while Media Molecule finishes up Tearaway.

Our Take
There seems to be some evidence compiled that suggests a 2013 release for the next LittleBigPlanet title. Not only is this completely realistic (and perfect for a Gamescom reveal), but it fits Sony's cross-generational strategy.

LittleBigPlanet 3 would be another tentpole PlayStation 3 title (along with Gran Turismo and Beyond: Two Souls) to prove Sony's extended commitment to the platform. The PlayStation 2 lived on well into the PS3's life cycle, and every indication is that the next console transition will be similar.
