You Will Be Able To Link Twitch And Steam Accounts This Week

by Mike Futter on Jul 05, 2013 at 10:41 AM

Twitch has just announced that Steam users will be able to link accounts on the two platforms. At first glance this seems like a modest convenience, but for Dota 2 players, it's significant.

Previously, Dota 2 fans had to choose between watching on Twitch and DotaTV, possibly missing out on in-game items. By going to the Connections page of your Twitch account, you'll be able to initiate the link and avoid having to make a painful viewing decision ever again.

As for where this partnership might go, Kevin Lin, COO of Twitch tells us, “As for future Steam-related offerings, this first step of implementing Steam Connect opens up a lot of possibilities for us, and we're excited to continue exploring other opportunities.”

Our Take
Right now the benefits that are offered by Dota 2 don't exist in many titles (Smite is one), but Twitch has been on the leading edge of one of the biggest trends in the industry (and you can check out Game Informer's channel).

Streaming took off and is pervasive thanks in part to that company's effort. This partnership could just as easily incentivize more developers to find ways to maximize the benefit of streaming and viewing, thereby organically generating word of mouth and longevity for their titles.
