DreamRift Originally Approached For Castle Of Illusion Remake

by Tim Turi on May 03, 2013 at 07:02 AM

Not long ago Sega revealed a downloadable HD remake of the Sega Genesis classic, Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse, is on the way. Last year, developer DreamRift partnered with Disney to create an Epic Mickey-flavored homage to the game, Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion. In a past interview about Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion, creative director Peter Ong said the original Sega Genesis Castle of Illusion cemented his taste as both a gamer and developer. We recently asked Ong what he thinks about his favorite game getting an HD remake. Ong says DreamRift was originally approached to develop the game and that he’s jealous his company couldn’t accept at the time.

“As an obsessive fan of the first game, I just can’t wait to see how the upcoming remake pays tribute to all nuances of what I believe to be one of the best games ever," says Ong. "While DreamRift feels absolutely honored in having had the opportunity to carry the events of Castle of Illusion forward with [Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion], I must admit that I’m particularly jealous of the upcoming remake… for a very good reason. When DreamRift had just started working on Power of Illusion, Disney asked us to do the Castle of Illusion remake as well, but we had to decline due to not having resources at the time to take on another game concurrently. It was truly one of the most agonizing moments of my life! However, my dismay turned into excitement when I found out soon after that development of the remake would be handled by Sega. With Sega being the company responsible for making the first Castle of Illusion, I’m sure that the game is in very competent hands, and we’re all in for a real treat.”

Sega's Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse HD remake

Ong goes on to suggest a feature he hopes the Castle of Illusion HD developer, Sega Studios Australia, puts in the game. “Now if they would just reveal a 2D-animated mode for the game (and bring it to 3DS please!), I’ll be in gaming paradise!”

Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion is available on 3DS now, and the downloadable HD remake of Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse will be out on 360, PS3, and PC this summer.
