Sony Releases Official PlayStation 4 Specs

Sony is fleshing out the specs of the PlayStation 4 with more detailed information on the system's processor, GPU, and disc drive.

Sony revealed some general specs for the PlayStation 4 during its conference last night, but a new press release from the company sheds a little more light on the system. Here's the rundown, straight from Sony:

  • CPU: single-chip custom processor, x86-64 AMD "Jaguar," 8 cores
  • GPU: 1.84 TFLOPS, AMD next-generation Radeon-based graphics engine
  • Memory: 8GB GDDR5
  • Built-in hard disk drive (Sony didn't specify how big the hard drive will be)
  • 6X Blu-Ray Drive, 8X DVD
  • USB 3 and Auxiliary ports (Sony didn't specify how many ports)
  • Gigabit Ethernet port,  802.11 B/G/N built-in WiFi, and Bluetooth 2.1
  • HDMI, Analog-AV, and digital optical outputs

During the press conference, Sony also stressed that including 8GB of GDDR5 memory was the number-one request from developers; 8GB provides over 15 times the amount of memory the PS3 has.

It will be a while until we see what developers are capable of doing with the new hardware, but Sony's pledge to make a more developer-friendly console this time around is good news for progammers and gamers alike.

  • Yea this will do just fine
  • This sounds so cool...can't wait to get it!!!

  • USB 3.0? Why, thank you! I'm ready..
  • I am hardware illiterate.
  • Excellent.

  • The WiFi technology isn't the best there is but is more than enough considering no one really bothers getting the best routers and modems. Otherwise I'm interested what this hardware can do when it doesn't have a massive operating system running underneath it.
  • Someone put this in English for me please. Lol. I'm not really into computer accessories or parts like this. Thanks!
  • That is a lot of stuff that I don't understand but I do understand the memory being 30x bigger, which is great.
  • I'd like to see how much of that RAM will actually be used for games. Think about it. If the Wii U uses 1 GB of its 2 GB of RAM for the OS, how much is the PS4 going to take up for all of its services like background downloads, people spectating, friends jumping in and out of your game, cross game chat, playing while the game finishes downloading and installing, the social network, cloud services and more? How much will be left for JUST the games?
  • clock speed?
  • The USB 3.0 and 8Gb of RAM sound awesome! Wierd that they aren't saying the exact grapics card model though, but it should be fine.
  • just waiting for the date and price...
  • Does this mean it will have a party chat option like the Xbox360?

  • I am sold on the PS4!!! Wow, 8 GB gddr5, so good.
  • At least there will be x64 compatibility, I would be mad if there wasn't.

  • im gonna wait and see what MS has to offer... but im properly gonna buy PS4 eventually.

  • From what I hear the memory is also unified. Should help for games like Skyrim where a split RAM might limit how much the game can use.

  • Soon PS4 gamers will be complaining about games badly ported from the PC
  • Sounds like it's really moving forward.

  • First time ever that I'm considering a Playstation, but I'm really liking what I see. Still need to see what Microsoft is bringing to the table though.
