DayZ Creator Lashes Out At The War Z On Reddit

Dean Hall, who created the phenomenal open-world zombie Arma 2 mode DayZ, has harsh words for the competing (and similar) game The War Z.

In an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit, Dean commented:

"I am angry about the WarZ. I'm very angry. I'm quite hurt personally because anyone can see how similar the words are, and while the average gamer knows the difference individual people don't. I've had family members/close friends mistake the difference and confront me about what they believed was unethical behavior they thought I was making. I really don't think anyone can understand just quite how exasperated that can make you feel when you've gambled everything on something, put your whole self and reputation on the line. So it hasn't made my life very pleasant and I disagree entirely with the conduct and how consumers have been treated.

I think the word "scam" is such a loaded word that isn't really relevant in the discussion, much like the word "terrorist" is a very loaded word and very much dependent on point of view."

He also suggested that he's been receiving complaints from people who have confused The War Z -- which had such a troubled launch on Steam that it was pulled from the site, forcing the creator issue a public apology -- with DayZ.

  • He has the utmost right to be angry, but I wonder if WarZ put a damper on any hopes of a full DayZ game.
  • Here we go...
  • Maybe he should come with an original name for the stand-alone release. DayZ is simple, but it could be better. If the War Z is banking on the success of its competitor, then DayZ should try to be better than them in every regard in order to show what a bunch of cash-in hacks they really are.
  • It's unfortunate that they have to deal with this copy-cat game. Hopefully DayZ sells very well, Or people buy stuff in it.
  • WarZ is a crap, dean Hall spoke nothing but truth and Day Z is the ***.
  • I hope this doesn't hurt his game in the end. I'm looking forward to it.
  • WarZ deserves to crash and burn, I feel bad because that means people lose their jobs...but how do the people who made that and that terrible Trucker game still have them?
  • Dang that sucks.

  • More than a couple of my friends believed The War Z to be the stand alone version of Day Z, so I find it very understandable to feel that way as an honest developer.

    It's really quite crappy.

  • Didn't a gameinformer article claim that War Z was basically just more fun to play than Day Z???
  • To put all of your effort into making something fantastic, and having it mistaken by your family members as this broken garbage has to be heartbreaking.
  • someone is butt hurt lol dont get me wrong i love dayz but i think he needs clam the **** down if fans cant tell the differences between the two games then they dont need to play the games at all and maybe instead of being a Dick about it he could take a nicer atemped at telling the warz devs that what they did is wrong i mean this statement makes me not want to buy a game from someone that gets so mad about something that happens in video games all the time

  • When WarZ was first announced, Dean Hall said he welcomes the competition as it encourages improvement. With how WarZ turned out, it just seems too obvious that it's a last minute attempt to cash in on the DayZ's success. I bet Dean Hall would actually be happier if WarZ was half decent.

  • He should be extremely angry! His hard work is getting smeared by the hands of slimy scam artists!

  • To quote Peter Griffin "oh my god who the hell cares!"
  • This whole warZ thing is just disgusting, the fact that its affecting this man's life in such a negative is a show of how copycat games can really be harmful.

  • Wait, these games aren't about Zorro?
  • I'm glad the War Z is starting to crumble. It was an obvious cash grab that in trying to rip off an already established franchise by releasing first they crapped out an incredibly bad game.
  • Ive always thought that the title "The War Z" took more influence from Max Brooks' novel "World War Z" than it did "DayZ".
