DayZ Standalone Delayed For Major Overhaul

An explanatory post on the official DayZ dev blog outlines why the standalone version of the popular zombie apocalypse simulator missed its 2012 release target.

A post simply titled "Where is the Standalone Release?" explains why fans aren't playing the standalone version of DayZ yet, as originally intended:

"Put simply, DayZ Standalone isn’t here because we had the chance to go from making a game that was just the mod improved slightly, packaged simply, and sold – to actually redeveloping the engine and making the game the way we all dreamed it could be. This blew any initial plans we had dictated to pieces."

Changes to the game include a new inventory system and scavenging mechanic, along with other UI changes and new art. The Chernarus map is also being revised, but the post states that the dev member in charge of the redesign is currently imprisoned in Greece on espionage charges.

The post also states that a closed beta will begin soon, with 500-1,000 players testing the new architecture. A new public release date has not been given, but at least fans can be comforted by the fact that the standalone release has been delayed for a good reason.

  • This game should totally be released on a console!!!! My PC could probably play it, but consoles are just more comfortable for me.

  • Being kinemortophobic I am very conflicted about the mod and now the stand alone game. I want to try it for it's survival aspects but...zombies...

    "You scavenge for items now, as individual parts, picking up pieces rather than piles, looking for cans on shelves or under beds. The new system opens the door for durability of items, disease tracking (cholera lingering on clothes a player wears…), batteries, addon components, and much more. If you shoot a player in the head to take his night vision, you will damage the night vision. The changes to this inventory system are huge."

    Sounds promising.

    I can't believe I paid my way into the Alpha/Beta only to be let down.

  • The Arma series are impresive in their own right, so I am guessing with the entire team of Bohemia Interactice (sans the arrested developers in Greece, sadly - and for a stupid reason) working on it, we should be looking at a great title in the near future.
