Sony Ends PlayStation 2 Production Worldwide

by Kyle Hilliard on Jan 06, 2013 at 01:05 PM

News of Sony ending PlayStation 2 production in Japan broke last month, but now Sony has confirmed to The Guardian that after 12 years, production of the console will be ending worldwide.

The console released in North America in 2000, and I have a strangely specific memory of my high school history teacher bragging to us that her husband was able to get one, despite its limited availability. More than 150 million PlayStation 2s were sold during its lifetime, with software sales reaching well into the billions.

Some of my favorite games of all time released for the PlayStation 2 including Team Ico's games, Naughty Dog's Jak and Daxter series, and Metal Gear Solid 2 among many others. The system lives on with the PlayStation Network's virtual market and HD collections.
