Sony Lays The PlayStation 2 To Rest In Japan

We'd almost forgotten that Sony was still selling its last-gen console, but the company has finally stopped shipping PlayStation 2 units to retailers in Japan. The system is nearly 13-years-old. It's time to move on.

Japanese gaming mag, Famitsu, recently ran a story stating that once Sony runs through it's remaining stock of PS2 units, the company will will stop shipping those systems to the Japanese market. This looks like the beginning of the end for one of the best selling consoles in history.

The PS2 first released in Japan in March 4, 2000 and has since sold over 150 million units. I remember being blown away the first time I saw Metal Gear Solid 2 in action and spending a couple late nights trying to finish up Final Fantasy X. R.I.P. old buddy! What are some of your favorite PS2 memories?

  • Well, it did have a good run. And my favorite memory was playing Sonic Riders. That was a fun game for the system.
  • RIP.

  • Could be they're getting ready for the next gen console.
  • Get 'em while you can, then sell them in box ten years down the road for a bundle.
  • Funny, since I just got my PS2 emulator working.
  • This things almost as old as I am...
  • Same as you almost. FFX and MGS3. It's really sad to see my childhood go like that :_

  • Simply the greatest console ever made. The amount of quality exclusives that it had was amazing, and something that we'll never see again due to rising development costs.
  • I got a PlayStation 2 late in it's generation, so I don't really have a bunch of memories of it. I suppose I spent a lot of time with Radiata Stories, that was a really fun JRPG.

  • Wow, didn't even know there was anyone out there still buying these.
  • Great console though.
  • We're done with the PS3/360 generation and neither of those consoles were as good or innovative as the ps2 was. For shame. RIP. I still keep you connected on the bedroom tv.

Just a correction on the article. PS2 isn't just 'one of the best selling consoles of all time'

It is THE best selling console of all time.
  • The PS2 was the first gaming system I had ever owned. So to be honest it kinda helped mold me into the gamer I am today.
  • Me and my brothers were blown away when we played Onimusha for the first time. It was by far the best graphics we've seen in a video game.

Other memories include buying the network adapter and playing the hell out of the best online shooter ever...Socom 2.

    An outstanding console!

  • Grand Theft Auto III. Made me believe in games again.
  • I don't understand why systems can't last fifty years or something. Or at least twenty. Sony is doing it right in prolonging their systems, but I feel like what they do should be industry standard, not just the exception. Instead of Nintendo, which has already dumped the Wii despite how well it sold.
  • One of my absolute favorite memories was using the Multitap to play 4-player split screen in TimeSplitters 2. When a few of the guys left, one friend and I broke night playing Split-Screen Co-op to finish the game. Amazing game - had a blast.

Aside from that, the console introduced me to amazing titles like Devil May Cry, Onimusha, Katamari Damacy, the continuation of the Mega Man X series, Zone of the Enders (With MGS2 Demo inside!), Kingdom Hearts, Okami, Shinobi, Tenchu, Tony Hawk series, Sled Storm, the ragdoll effects and shortness of The Bouncer....So many more to name. The Ps2 saw the last of certain franchises I wish were still here today. The Ps2 is hands down my favorite console I still play today. The last favorite console memory was the SNES, followed by the PsOne. Rest in peace old friend. I may buy another console to keep for storage in case my current decides to take a poop.
  • Multiplayer- Split-screening on Star Wars Battlefront 1 and 2. Good times...
Singleplayer- Grand Theft Auto and Katamari Damacy was where it was at.
  • We'll miss ya

  • Rest in Peace my great friend. It will be missed by me a lot.
