Guild Wars 2 Permabans 3,000 Players For Using Exploit

by Jeff Cork on Aug 31, 2012 at 04:26 AM

Guild Wars 2 just launched a few days ago, and the MMORPG's developer has already issued its first wave of bans. Arenanet permabanned 3,000 players who took advantage of an in-game exploit, but offered to reduce the sentences in a one-time deal.

Chris Whiteside, the game's lead producer, explained the move via a Reddit post. Whiteside explained that the studio is taking a zero-tolerance approach to exploits. "We take our community and the integrity of the game very seriously, and want to be clear that intentionally exploiting the game is unacceptable. The players we banned were certainly intentionally and repeatedly exploiting a bug in the game. We intended to send a very clear message that exploiting the game in this way will not be tolerated, and we believe this message now has been well understood.”

Arenanet is offering those affected a chance for redemption, by allowing them to convert the permabans into more palatable 72-hour sentences. Don't get cocky though; the studio says that this is a one-time deal. The game has also been patched to prevent any further offenses.
