Fez Patch Will Not Be Patched

Last month a Fez patch was pulled because it created a new problem with the game. The patch is back, but it's the same patch, and sadly, it seems like we've seen the last of Fez patches.

According to the Polytron Blog, last month's patch problem will not be resolved because, "Microsoft would charge us tens of thousands of dollars to re-certify the game." The game save problem that some have experienced only effects a very small percentage of the population, and Polytron believes that, "the current patch is safe for an overwhelming majority of players."

If you're just now starting a new game of Fez or haven't yet completed the game, you should be fine. The new bug only seems to effect those who've already completed the game. Read more about that problem here.

Polytron added an apology saying, "To the less-than-1% who are getting screwed, we sincerely apologize. We know this hurts you the most, because you’re the ones who put the most times into the game. And this breaks our hearts. We hope you dont think back on your time spent in FEZ as a total waste."

You can read more about why Polytron won't be fixing the patch here, but if you haven't yet played the game, now is a good time to start.

  • Good ol' finger pointing.

  • Wow, just goes to show how hard it is for indie developers to get the support they need. It's most unfortunate, but it's at least a good thing that it doesn't affect everyone that bought the game. I'm gonna have to go back and restart this game soon.

  • ...Microsoft sometimes to me is the best thing in the world.Sometimes I feel likes its a rat hole.

  • What! I havn't been playing this because I heard about the bug and was waiting for the patch just to be safe. Now there is no patch because they would have to pay for that!?!? I thought I paid for updates with my membership, no? They charge the developers too!? I can't even understand this, I'm just shaking my head. This really sucks for the people that got glitched, but I forget, is their save just gone and they have to "new game" or is their entire game corrupt?

  • . . . (shrug). . .

  • That stinks that it won't get fixed for those few people.

  • And this is the problem with console makers, and why they are ruining innovation. This is why so many small, indie games don't make it on Xbox 360. We get some for sure, like Fez, but an alarming number of the are left on PC, and that's because Microsoft charges people through the roof for simple things like patches. Heck, if you send in your game for approval to Microsoft, and they find something wrong with it, they force you to spend thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars if you want to send it in for approval a second time. How is a small dev house supposed to afford this? And why are they being charged that much damn money to FIX a game? Hey, Microsoft, I thought you were about giving us the best game experiences? Yet, suddenly if developers can't spare 40 grand they can't fix their games? Which means players bought a game to support Microsoft and the developer and are now stuck with a broken game. Why is it so expensive Microsoft? Why are you charging these guys over 40 grand to fix their games through patches? Surely it doesn't cost you 40 grand to implement them. I download updates and patched for my PC and Mac and other devices every day, heck, I downloaded over 20 updates for iPhone Apps today alone. I seriously doubt Apple is charging these guys $40,000 to fix their games. So, what reason would you be doing it other than to make more money by profiting off of the good will of developers? They release a game, find out that some things are broken, and when they attempt to fix the situation and give paying customers the best game they possibly can, you rush in like a crack addict, tackle them, and force them to cough up enough money to by 3 brand new cars. If that isn't completely hypocritical of the message you've been shoveling us gamers for years, I don't know what is. You claim you want to be the best and have the best games. You never told us you actively make it as hard as possible for developers to actually fix their games. I wonder how many broken games never got fixed because of your highway robbery Microsoft. I wonder how many gamers who supported you got screwed because of this.
  • Microsoft is starting to sound Like EA and Activision right now.

  • WTF?

  • Okay, I've seen videos of this game and it doesn't look like a criticism that this is a Paper Mario "clone" holds much weight. At the same time, I do think the developer just looked at Paper Mario and stole just about all of the ideas from it. He made it just different enough that it wouldn't be exactly the same and for that reason I would never buy this game because I don't want to support a developer that can't create their own ideas.
  • Why is Microsoft doing that? They need to fix a game that has a bug. That doesn't mean you have to charge them tons of money just so they can make everyone happy. Microsoft, with all respect to you as a company, you really need to rethink about what you do with bugs.

  • I don't blame Microsoft, I blame Polytron for releasing a bugged game. You should've gotten your sh*t together in the first place.

  • So it's MS's fault because polytron patched a game that shouldn't need patching because it should have been fixed in the first place before release date? Hmmm.
  • Thats a real shame. I was hoping to try Fez in the near future, but if there are bugs that wont get fixed...kind of deters me from dropping the MS points on it. I dont fancy starting a game with the thought "Will it break?" stuck in my head. Not sure who should be held responsible - the developer releasing a buggy product or Microsoft and their money-focused policies?
  • Nothing like telling your paying customers to go eff themselves because you're too cheap and greedy. Maybe next time (hopefully and likely there will not be another one) you will actually test your game for more than 5 minutes before releasing it Fish.
  • I don't know who I'm more annoyed with, Microsoft of the gaming community. Skyrim comes out and it's the buggiest thing most of you have ever played and its all good because it's TES, it's Bethesda. Oh that crazy Bethesda, always releasing silly buggy games. We can't be mad at you Bethesda! Doesn't matter that they're one of the biggest companies in gaming right now. Doesn't matter that they had thousands to millions of people begging to be beta testers. Nope, it's allllllll okay. But a tiny indie developer misses a glitch that affects less than 1% of the people, and possibly only kicks in after they've beaten the game and suddenly they're lazy assholes who should have to shell out an insane amount of money to fix such a miniscule problem. You. People. Are. Dicks. Do you honestly think this dev has the technical no how to find every *** problem in the game? And let's not forget that each and every one of you would easily and instantly brush off any mistakes you made with a casual "*** happens." The dev isn't without blame but those saying he's just a lazy *** are just inexcusably ignorant.
  • @TheMichaelJolly

I thought your post was a bit strongly worded until I saw the comments below... How are people so unreasonable? They don't have the resources of bigger companies to patch multiple times.

Also to the people who haven't bought the game yet, it's clearly stated in the article that it only affects people who already beat the game! Please do not dismiss this game because of absurd reasoning!

I did not buy Fez yet, but it is still near the top of my list of games to buy once I finish my backlog. The reviews for it were nothing short of stellar and the description has me excited. Please support a developer who clearly has a lot of talent and can be expected to make great games in the future. People... let's not shoot ourselves in the foot.

Games occasionally have bugs. If you refuse to play a game with bugs, you'd be missing out on a large percentage of great games. I respect this developer because they cared enough to bring attention to the matter and apologize for it. Most would not publicly say anything unless there was an uproar over it. To those who are affected, I feel your pain but you must have had a great time playing it right? Also I imagine you still have the achievement points as bragging rights?

  • Polytron is whiny.

First they complain about Mojang getting preferential treatment and now they complain about a fee i'm sure they were well aware of before they agreed to put the game on XBLA.
  • It's unfortunate that Polytron is having these issues, but at least the bug only affects a small portion of the population. On the other hand, it's absolutely atrocious to see the hate-laden comments in this article laden at a company and a game made by all of one man, as ANYONE here could do what Phil Fish did--and do it better. Big talkers as you sit in your parents' basement typing away at a keyboard flush with more ignorance than information on the facts. Claiming "Polytron is just pointing the finger" while you sit there and point the finger at them all the while knowing absolutely nothing of what it takes to make a video game--or that Fez was largely made by just one guy. These whiners--like the Mass Effect 3 crybabies wanting published art to be changed for their petty little minds--are what's WRONG with modern gaming. The "know-it-all" gamer who's never satisfied, who never understands, is quick to take sides, is quick to cast blame, and who runs to the internet at Sonic speeds to post their ignorance and hatred of the industry up for all too see. I see a few decent posts--those who see that there is a clash between Fez and Microsoft's business strategy that has this unfortunate outcome. Those who understand that Fez was made by all of one man, and can understand how, sometimes, even terrible bugs can be missed. But it's the ignorant nonsense of "WELL HE SHOULD'VE FOUND EVERY BUG, THERE'S NO EXCUSE I DON'T CARE IF HE IS ONE MAN" being uttered from a fanbase happy to switch gears at any time to say "I DON'T MIND ALL THE BUGS IN SKYRIM, THEY COULDN'T CATCH THEM ALL, THEY HAD TONS OF TESTERS BUT I THINK THAT'S OKAY." This isn't about taking sides, either Phil Fish or Microsoft. This is about actually understanding what's happened and the details of the issues--which a pathetically massive number of you flatly refuse to do. If you're going to live this ignorantly and this brainlessly, then you might as well quit gaming and go back to watching marathons of Jersey Shore and Maury Povich. You obviously aren't using your brain for anything good anyway. And if you want to respond, as one of those ignorant complainers attacking Polytron, Phil Fish, or for that matter, even Microsoft, feel free to MAKE A BETTER GAME BY YOURSELF, LIKE PHIL FISH DID, BUT BETTER AND GET IT PUBLISHED ON XBLA FIRST to show us all how right you are in your blanket hatred of this issue. And do that before you spout your nonsense at my post, otherwise all you're doing is proving me right. If it's "so easy" to make a bug-free game like Fez, and get it to XBLA, and get it patched (if you still have bugs, which you probably will), then you can do it before you return here advertising your ignorance of an industry you claim to love.
