Microsoft Confirms $99 Subscription Xbox 360

The rumors were true. Microsoft today confirmed a $99 subscription-based console available at its U.S. stores. In order to redeem the deal, you must bring the coupon seen here to a participating Microsoft store.

The deal requires customers to sign up for a 2-year subscription to Xbox Live Gold at $14.99 per month. The console is a 4GB Xbox 360 and includes Kinect.

Early termination fees apply, which you can read about here.

  • As a gamestop employee i will probably sell a few of these, even though i know in my mind it is a bad deal.

Edit: you have to pay Microsoft 250 and down for cancellation fees.. what a joke of a system.. plus a 4 gig hard drive what are we in the 2000's?

Just re-read and noticed it said that its only through there stores.. hopefully it stays that way. (thanks to dagnastyep for pointing that out to me.)
  • Honestly I don't get what the fuss is about. This offer is here for those who don't have large incomes.Monthy is easier than paying all of it up-front for them.

  • thats poopy
  • How skeezy

  • This was the big microsoft E3 announcement wasn't it....?
  • I guess this is a decent option for high school/college kids who can't pay the full price straight up. I can't see anyone else who would actually do this though.
  • This is a bad deal anyway, but those termination fees are really high.

  • 15 dollars times twelve months times two years equals... 360 dollars? Oh Microsoft lolol
  • oh microsoft, must you continue making a joke of yourselves like this. It wont work for this and it sure as hell wont work for the failbox 720. So give it up.
  • The system also comes with a troll face tattooed on the side of the xbox.
  • Wow, a scaling ETF - how generous XD

*shrug* I would venture to guess this won't be hugely successful venture, but who knows. Interesting to see it come to fruition at any rate.

On a related note, for everyone who isn't already hip to this, buy your Gold subscriptions through third-party retailers. Amazon has 12 months marked down to $49 or less all the time and Newegg often on puts 12 months on sale, sometimes as low as 36$.
  • Cell phone service providers have been doing this for years with their "free" or "$99" phones. You have to agree to 2 year contracts. Funny thing is, people got sick of that contract crap and most phone companies dropped them to 1 year contracts, not to mention quite a few providers don't make you sign a contract at all anymore. I guess Microsoft is just late to party, most people already know how those 2 year contracts are set up to fleece you.
  • Ok, so do you have to pay $99 and then the monthly subscription? Or is it just the $15 and then if you terminate early you owe $99?

It'd be nice if they included 4000 ms a year or something.
  • Why, oh WHY, would anyone buy this? It makes no logical sense. Oh..wait! That's why they are doing it. It is b/c it makes ZERO sense MS is doing it. smh

  • anyone who buys one of these is just plain dumb. don't buy them so the next-gen consoles don't fallow the same plan.
  • Anyone who purchases this crap deal is a moron and deserves to be ripped off, simple math shows how much of a ripoff it is.
  • That is an awful deal, they are just hoping parents don't read the terms and buy this for their kids.

  • A 2 year "CONTRACT DEAL" for a home gaming console.. no thanks and they even included early termination fee's... ok..when did Xbox go Cell Phone clone?? No thanks sorry you have ZERO right into forcing me into a contract to play on a console which not only makes me concerned about my info being shared to other companies.. but you throw in just 4GB's worth of HDD space.. no thanks
  • Yea I do not find this deal appealing. You lose money overall and the termination fees are pretty high.

Edit: I can see how this would appeal to some people. You don't pay the full price for the Xbox upfront and pay it over time. It'll only end up being $50 more that way. But in that case, at least give the 360 a bigger HD. Without a bigger HD, the deal is not worth it to me.
