Resident Evil Creator Returns To Survival Horror

Shinji Mikami, who might be best known for creating the original Resident Evil games, is developing a new title in the survival horror genre.

This news comes from the latest issue of Famitsu, which details his first project at his new Tango Gameworks studio. The game doesn't have an official title yet. It's currently codenamed "Zwei," which means "2." Mikami says, however, the codename has nothing to do with the content of the game.

Mikami will serve as executive director, and although the game's platforms haven't been decided, he said it will probably be on HD consoles. Tango Gameworks was acquired by Bethesda Softworks parent company ZeniMax Media in October 2010.

"I've found my focus and once again I'm striving for pure survival horror," he said. "I am being very hands-on to see that the quality is there." Concept art was revealed showing the feel and tone Mikami is going for. Click the image below for a full-sized image.

Mikami last worked on Shadows of the Damned, Vanquish, and God Hand.

  • Intrigued.
  • Looking Forward To Finding Out More.
  • Hmm, it would nice for the survival horror genre to take a step forward instead of just lateral steps. The last survival horror game that really did that was Dead Space. The original launched the premise and it's been slowly getting better since. It'll be nice to see one of the innovators work his magic with the current gen tech
  • Good. We need more games in the horror genre.
  • Cool this could be awesome. Zwei is also a name in the anime phantom requiem for the phantom, sorry useless information but im currently watching it on netflix so figured i'd throw it in.
  • Thank you! Hopefully this new game blows RE6 away, so that maybe capcom won't turn every game into an action fest in order to... what was it capcom said? Oh yea because they want "call of duty like sales."
  • definitely interested. I love the original Resident Evils!

  • Can't wait to hear more!

  • looks like the robotics guy from mythbusters
  • If anyone can bring survival horror back its Shinji Mikami. Everything I've read about his work on the Resi games and his fearless innovation makes me excited to hear any developments with his work, and by working with Bethesda, who many devs say is very creatively liberating, I think we can expect something very amazing. Also, with them as Tango's publisher, I wonder how 'Japanese-y' their game will be? Hopefully that didn't sound racist...
  • I've seen like 8 news stories on this guy returning to survival horror. Is he really returning this time? Let's hope so.

  • Loving the concept art, although I have to say I'm more interested in the design concepts he's going to be revealing.

Then there's a part of me that wishes Mikami-san would go ahead and work on a spiritual successor to Dino Crisis.

  • Awesome! RE 2 is one of my 5 favorite games of all time, and he produced it and oversaw it's development. Can't wait to play whatever this game is in the dark in attempts to soil my trousers lol.
  • ? They changed the pic...

  • oh my

  • Good luck, I'd love to play a true to term survival horror. Modern 'scary' games are great but focus too much on action and too little on the horror. The concept art looks intriguing.
  • God Hand is a game everyone should play at some point.
  • Acquired by ZeniMax, which means the game will be broken out the box and then they will sue everyone who plays it :P

But seriously that's interesting, probably wont see anything about it for awhile though.

  • At last! The game is in safe hands with Mikami!

  • Very good news. I really miss a true survival horror.
