Super Mario Bros. Wii U At E3

Update: A Nintendo of America spokesperson clarified Miyamoto's comments saying the new game is based off of last year's tech demo. Below is the company's statement sent to Game Informer:

In a recent interview, Mr. Miyamoto confirmed that a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Wii U system will be shown at this year's E3 Expo. This is based on the Mario experience that was demonstrated at last year's E3 Expo. We'll have more to announce about our plans for the E3 Expo at a later date.

Nintendo today confirmed it will show off a new Super Mario Bros. title for the Wii U at E3 this June.

The news originally surfaced from an interview with Spanish newspaper El Mundo, where designer Shigeru Miyamoto allegedly said there will be a new Super Mario title at E3. Nintendo later confirmed the news in a statement sent to Eurogamer.

"In a recent interview, Mr. Miyamoto confirmed that a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Wii U system will be shown at this year's E3 Expo," a Nintendo spokesperson said. "We'll have more to announce about our plans for the E3 Expo at a later date."

E3 kicks off on June 5, 2012 in Los Angeles.

  • so nintento is comeing out swinging with the wii u thats good
  • Yay!!! another Mario game...*sigh* why can't the Japanese make something new...i mean i love Mario, but really japan you have not been making some new games lately. And by the way japan Stop living off of your former glories. This is why games like the Final Fantasy, Pokemon, ect. have gone stale...you keep on making countless nth versions of you games that at times they lack originality.

i am just saying this so all of you repliers don't get mad at me, i still am highly infatuated with Mario.....and no this is not a troll...
  • What a surprise. /sarcasm
  • super mario sunshine 2?
  • Can't wait to see Mario in HD!
  • color me not surprised

  • Honestly, the only Mario game I will even be interested in is a full 3D one like Super Mario 64, Sunshine, or Galaxy 1 & 2. The side scrollers are just too easy. There is rarely any true skill required anymore. The only Mario games that offer any real challenge anymore are the 3D ones.
  • Hard to believe it's almost already time for this year's E3.
  • WOOT! WOOT! I REALLY can't wait for E3 2012! More 3DS game details, Wii U details, Wii U games, and even more all coming from Nintendo at E3! What do you think this game will be? Will it be a classic Mario platformer? Will it be a sport game?

  • Is it June 5 yet.

  • Even if its Super Mario Galaxy 3, it won't get me excited for what looks like just a fancy new controller.
  • I want a follow up to the Galaxy series as oppose to the New Super Mario series.
  • You know what would be great? If they made a first person Mario game. Or if they made a true rpg inspired game and not something like Saga and Mario Rpg. Something unique and innovative. They did it with Zelda, and Metroid, than just need to do it with Mario.
  • Got my attention. Oh, what? Someone saying stop making Mario and Zelda games? Oh they have, it's called a 360 and ps3. Viva la Mario.
  • Awwwwwww yeah! Can't wait! :D

  • I guess this is why they registered "Super Mario 4" Hoping it's a 2D side scroller similar to New super Mario Bros graphics, but better and HD, and plays like Super Mario World.
  • I'm excited!

  • Of course we would see the Mario title at E3 on the Wii U! What other game would they like to show off haha. I'm not complaining, I can't wait to see some Wii U games shown at the Expo.

  • Nintendo's making a Mario game for the Wii? Why, new games with Mario in them are incredibly rare. They only happen 12 times a year. We never could have predicted this obvious statement from Nintendo. Frankly, if they really wanted to get us excited for Wii U games, they'd announce, you know, something NEW or at least unexpected. A new Eternal Darkness, maybe?
  • Cue people accusing Nintendo of never changing despite the fact that they never bother to buy new Nintendo series and the series they buy actually do change, just not the character or name.
