Sony Closes Zipper Interactive

Sony today confirmed it has closed Seattle-based game studio Zipper Interactive, the creators of the SOCOM series.

Responding to rumors last week, Sony representatives sent Game Informer the following statement:

Sony Computer Entertainment can confirm the closure of Zipper Interactive, a Seattle-based internal game development studio that has been part of the global development operation of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios (SCE WWS).

The closure is a result of a normal cycle of resource re-alignment within SCE WWS. Zipper has completed all work associated with its most recent project, Unit 13 for PlayStation Vita. Zipper titles MAG, SOCOM 4 and Unit 13 will continue to be supported, including the new Daily Challenges in Unit 13.

Zipper had approximately 80 employees.

Comments
  • I used to love SOCOM but the last couple were s**t so I'm not surprised

  • But MAG was a decent title. I really hope some other studio will pick up that IP.
  • I wish the best of luck to all those employees.

  • RIP Zipper.... I really liked SOCOM 4. :(

  • This is a bummer. I hope the best for everyone working at Zipper.

  • Not a surprise considering they could not even get matchmaking correct on Socom 4. Kudos to creating Socom though, at least the first 2 were amazing.

  • Sony closes zipper? O_o

  • it would of been better if they just reallocate them like they did with Bend studios to portable gaming. because if you just get zipper out of the millitary setting they can creat one hell of a 3rd person shooter.

  • I'm glad they're continuing to support Unit 13 though... I was about to demand for a refund...

  • MAG was amazing, the part about the titles continuing to be supported is a joke though.  Sony cut support for mag over a year ago.  They dont even do maintenance on the servers anymore.

  • Noooooooooooo! There goes my hopes for MAG 2. :(

  • they made generic games anyway
  • My prayers are that they get new jobs soon. Good luck guys :/

  • I feel bad for the people who lost their jobs, but Zipper had it coming after they stopped listening to THEIR community and went "forward" with Nocom 4.

  • As a Seattle area native, it's a sad blow to the home team. Parting is such sweet sorrow Zipper. I give my best to the workers.

  • im not shock about this. mag and socom suck bad
  • Bummer!

  • Thank God.

  • well,i guess zipper got..zipped

  • ohhhhhhhhh
