Rumor: Sony Planning On Shutting Down Zipper Interactive

The writing could be on the wall for Socom and MAG developer, Zipper Interactive.

According to sources at Kotaku, the developer is being hit with layoffs and project cancellations and may even face studio shutdown. Zipper’s last game was the PSone Vita title Unit 13

We’ve reached out to Sony for confirmation, but the publisher declined to comment.

  • I don't think I've ever played a Zipper game, but it still sucks that it might be shut down. Hope those people can get jobs fairly quickly afterwards.

  • While this isn't TOO suprising, it definitly sucks to see a studio close.

  • Zipper had been on the decline since SOCOM II IMO.  Sad to see it happen but it seemed rather inevitable.

  • This is great news, it serves them right for not listening to their fanbase when they made "Socom" 4 and their MAG fanbase when they started implementing all of the stupid changes to weapons in patches. I sure hope we can get a real classic Socom one day though.

  • Well..they did ruin Socom.
  • I only ever played the original SOCOM and found it to be an innovative, fun game.

  • socom just has never been good.

  • They simply failed to make fun addicting games. They had the abilities to do it but never used them. It's sad to see this happen, but they had it coming.

  • Sad to hear about that I really liked there games like Socom but they haven't come out with something profitable so the writing was on the wall:(..

  • It is sad, yet as said many  a time before, not unexpected. Zipper just plain out hasn't been making good/succesful games in these recent years. It was only a matter of time 'til Sony got tired of fundding projects which hit the bargain bins two weeks after release date. I hate to be harsh to Zipper as they have made some great games. I remember having a SOCOM game called like Modern Assault or something like that for my PS2 when I was like 6 or so. I played the *** out of that game. Its also sad to see more people getting laid off, but thats how the cookie crumbles I guess

  • Aww. That's no good. While I do enjoy Unit 13, it was not without it's problems. I never got into SOCOM or MAG, though. Still, it's sad to see a company go under. They're not bad, not like Slant Six, but you gotta have bombastic selling games to make it these days.

  • ): All my hopes for a proper Socom remake just went down the drain.

  • WTF?!!! sony are u doing s...t??!

  • Mod

    Well that sucks...

  • That's a shame. I'm really enjoying Unit 13!

  • i hate to be "that guy" but i cant help it, "PSone Vita" what happened there?

  • SOCOM 2 still has the best modern military shooter campaign, in my opinion. It didnt rely on scripted cinematic "mind blowing" events. If Zipper would have stuck to a more realistic formula, instead of going the Hollywood route for SOCOM 4, it would have been great. Still sad that theyre closing down. Now im just hoping that Ghost Recon: FS has the campaign ive been waiting for.
  • Yeah for corporate ho-bags. You released a single bad game? YOU MUST DIE! We don't care about your history and we don't give second chances! Raawwr!

Although I never was a fan of any of their games, I don't like seeing studios go under. SOCOM was once a very popular game.
