The lights are on
UPDATE: EA has provided us with the following official statement in response to allegations that the "From Ashes" day one DLC for Mass Effect 3 was on the disc:
"From Ashes is a 600 MB+ download with all new content, including the mission on Eden Prime, new dialogue options and conversations with Javik, new cinematics, the Prothean weapon, and new appearances for all squad members. All of the above content was completed while the main game was in certification and are not available on the disc. "As stated previously, in order to seamlessly integrate Javik into the core campaign, certain framework elements and character models needed to be put on disc. We did something similar with Zaeed and Kasumi in Mass Effect 2."
ORIGINAL STORY: From angry fans to defensive developers, everyone seems to have an opinion on Mass Effect 3's day one downloadable content and whether or not it's acceptable. The latest update comes from a fan claiming to have proof that the squad member unlocked in the DLC was on the disc from the start.
Responding to statements from BioWare saying that the "From Ashes" DLC content was not worked on until after Mass Effect 3 was completed and thus couldn't be included on the disc, YouTube user lljkceski created the video below. In it, the fan claims that by changing a single line of code in the PC version of Mass Effect 3, you can unlock the Prothean squadmate for play without downloading the DLC.
You can watch the video below to see the evidence and decide for yourself if you think its damning. Keep in mind that at this point it's basically BioWare's word versus random fan's word -- either way, you're trusting someone without full knowledge of what went on behind the scenes.
For now, I've reached out to EA and BioWare to see if they have any further comments on the day one DLC or the allegations made in this video. I'll update this post if I hear anything back.
[Thanks to Duraigo for the tip]
this is interesting i will have to say imma go with the fan because reason being i hate spending money on top of more money and so on just for a single game like saints row you buy it new and you only have the season pass which only gives you 3 pack but you still have 2 packs left plus the online pass to but and i dont think thats right to pay for sumthin just to play online
it may not matter to most people but its the concept of paying for something that should have been in the core. now me personally i dont mind paying for dlc so long as it is good and not actually suppose to be in the core. all this online pass and dlc and season pass is asking for too much
im going for game design so people hit me up and tell me what games you like and what would you like im going to design a RPG,ACTION/ADVENTURE, and so on
All video game companies are getting totally out of control with the online passes, DLC, etc. Now i am a fan of DLC but under the circumstances that it is something not included with the core game. Think of Bethseda's DLC for Fallout 3 & NV. That is the way it should be, the DLC is released way after the game itself & actually expands the storyline & gameplay. I'm sick of companies bleeding us of every dollar we have for a new gun or weapons in a game. Now the online pass i feel is the most evil thing they have come up with in this generation of gaming. I really don't even understand the thinking behind it. Companies like EA do not sell used games so i can not see how stores such as gamestop doing so hurts compaines like EA. To me it is total greed, they have already made a profit on the sale of the game in the first place. Now they see another company making money from selling used copies of their game & they don't like it. SO instead of taking legal action against gamestop they punish us?!?! Don't make sense to me, honestly it pisses me off cause we have all been loyal consumers to both the game companies & gamestop. If the big game compaines have such a problem with the resale of their games, they should take legal action against who is reselling the games & purchase & sell the used games themselves or totally disallow the resale of their games. That would suck but I think it would be better than puinishing the people who are trying to save some money. Futhermore the compaines are also taking advantage of the least affluent gamers. I know plenty of pepole who couldn't afford to game if it wasn't for gamestop & simalar retailers who sell used games/equipment. Worst part is these are the most loyal gamers, who else would spend money they really don't have to experience these games? So i say shame on the game companies who have started using the online passes, you are alienating & insulting your most loyal consumers.
I love DLC. Everybody complains about it, but then they ask for DLC: "Make a better ending as DLC, or forever be hated by me! But also I hate you for making DLC and I don't want to buy it!"
I turned into a hermit after I bought ME3 for 3 or 4 days. I was upset that after going back into the public I saw DLC already out. So depressing...
I don't think lljkceski has any point - Bioware admitted Jarvik's modelling was in the game. Did lljkceski state that the entire Eden Prime mission was on the disc already?
I don't get why people are complaining? This only proves that the models were on disk since the beginning. DLC is an add-on that uses moodels from the original game to create the character or levels. Javik, in this case was already on disk, possibly for testing purposes, to make sure he integrates flawlessly once the game goes live. Random fan in above video just showed us that we can access the (test) Javik by changing a line of code. Well, does changing said line give us the mission? Does it give us the entirety of the From Ashes content? He didn't show us. This fan may be withholding information just to get people on his bandwagon. Did that ever cross your minds? If anything, he knows how to kindle a fire from the embers already burning. In the words of Heath Ledger "All they needed was a little push!"
