Sony Confirms PSP Passport Program Not Coming To Vita In North America

With the Vita launch in Japan last year, Sony unveiled a nice program allowing Japanese gamers to pay a small fee to download their original PSP games on the new handheld. As the North American launch of the Vita approaches, we've patiently waited to hear about a U.S. version of the UMD Passport plan. Sadly, it's not going to happen.

Kotaku reports on official word from Sony that there will be no North American equivalent of the UMD Passport program. As such, you'll have to hold on to an old-school PSP to keep using your UMDs, although Sony says you will be able to re-download any downloadable PSP games tied to your Sony Entertainment Network account.

I'm definitely annoyed by this but not surprised. Still, at least I'll be able to keep playing Corpse Party on the Vita. That's what really matters, right?

  • Sigh................
  • That's pretty disappointing that the service isn't available here, but I've been buying my PSP games on the PSN in case. Except Birth By Sleep, which isn't available digitally...
  • Awe, that's not fair but I'll probly get it to play the Vita games.

  • That's a shame. I don't understand why they won't give north America this feature.
  • Well, I was going to get a new (but probably used) psp anyway. Mine is breaking down & I want to play Birth by Sleep...again.

  • Not happy about it, but at least this justifies me keeping my PSP and the games I have for it. :/

  • !-guard in MGS

  • Good thing I bought most of my PSP games on PSN.

  • Oh, Sony. You're a real class act.
  • Either I'm not getting a vita, or I'm going to have to wait longer since I will not sell my PSP.

  • That's not going to help Vita sales in the US. You would think they would allow it as an incentive for PSP owners to upgrade.
  • Yet another reason I'm not buying one.
  • wow, sony makes weird decisions with hardware launches.

  • psflop
  • well this doesn't effect me as I got rid of my PSP and PSP games like 2 or 3 years ago. Sooo... I'll stick with my original plan: buy the vita, to PLAY vita games!!!
  • Money talks a lot in America, but it rarely says anything I want to hear.
  • Well that just gave me one more reason not to pick this system up yet. There is no excuse not to be able to transfer your games over or have the passport. I know the Vita are using a different format then PSP, but with Nintendo you were able to transfer ALL data from the DS/DSlite/DSi/DSiXL to the 3DS. Sony should've thought this through. This will come back to bite them in the a**.
  • With decisions like this, it's no wonder they were expecting a bad year.
  • I cant wait, and this doesnt really down me. sure i love my psp but do i expect to keep my ps3 games to ps4? sure it would be nice but i wont count on it.
