PSP Owners Get Discounted Downloads For Vita

Sony just announced a UMD Passport program for the PlayStation Vita in Japan. Hopefully this program will migrate to the U.S.

According to Andriasang, starting December 6 (more than a week before the system launches), Japanese PS Vita buyers will be able to downloaded versions of UMD games they already own, at a discounted rate.

Getting the discount is a simple as 1,2,3…4:

  1. Download a UMD Registration Application from PlayStation Store to your PSP.
  2. Boot up the UMD Registration Application from your PSP's XMB menu and insert the UMD game you want to register into the system.
  3. Follow the prompts to register your UMD disc with your PSN account.
  4. You can then download the downloadable version of your game at discount price.

Right now UMD Passport has only been announced for Japan, but we hope to hear details about a similar program for Western gamers soon.

  • It's cool that they're doing this, but it only brings up the question, why isn't it just free? If they've set up a system to determine whether or not you've already paid for the game, why should you have to pay again?
  • Exactly how big of a discount are we talking about here? 10%? 20%? 90%? If it's like 90%, (although I doubt it will be), it might be worthwhile. It doesn't make sense to pay more than that for games I already own. Otherwise, I'll hang on to my PSP even after the Vita comes.

  • Too bad I never got a PSP...the lack of titles turned me off, but the Vita sparks my interest
  • Too bad I didn't own one...

  • What if the game isn't available on PSN like Birth by Sleep isn't?
  • I'm very happy with this. Hopefully it's a GOOD discount and not something like 10% off.

Anyways, I can't wait for the Vita!

  • This isn't a huge deal, honestly. Do you know how quickly the homebrew scene will likely catch up, giving you all the capability to download copies of the games you own without having to pay for them twice? Yessir, won't be long at all.
  • Wow thats awesome. too bad i sold my psp and umds

  • This should be free
  • I'm keeping my PSP anyway. I'm not paying twice for any game I already own.
  • that wat up fools at sony realy keepin thier promise and for fools complianin about havin to pay a discounted price stop bitchn sony didnt have to do this for umd owners and they have no proof your not just claimin to have a disk and not just askin someone to borow it as proof u own somethin u dont just to get free games
  • sony should kill their marketing guy if it was free they would of got sooo much praise vita sells would go through the roof but noooo

  • It might be worth paying for IF the games include dual analog support.
  • Thats really cool actually, good on Sony for doing that.

  • I hope so cuz that is sweet!

  • I don't have a PSP, very cool though.

  • Better than nothing.

  • this is so cool, but i be wainting for some more information about this but is a good move for sony

  • should be free since you own it and be able to track it for trade in.
  • i think that its a pretty good idea but i feel that buying the game again is kinda a kick in the balls, but yeah i'd make that sacrifice
