Final Fantasy XIII-2's Ending Explained By Director

This does contain a spoiler about the ending of Final Fantasy XIII-2, but it's not as severe as you may expect. It's nothing that wasn't covered in our review of the game, but you have been warned.

So, at the end of Final Fantasy XIII-2, you get a "to be continued" message. Game director Motomu Toriyama explained at a Final Fantasy XIII-2 event at the Taipei Game Show 2012 that the ending doesn't necessarily guarantee a sequel. Instead, the "to be continued" is present to entice player to seek out the different endings, and Toriyama also expects DLC to expand the game further. We already know about this DLC, and episodes covering the exploits of Snow and Sazh were also hinted.

This of course doesn't completely rule out a new Final Fantasy XIII in the future, but for the moment you'll have to stick to DLC if you want to explore more of that universe.

  • They need to reboot...
  • I still plan on getting this game. What I keep wondering is how did they get an 8(?) if they listened to fan feedback and fixed some of the issues? I thought that was a good thing?
  • I still want to play this game. However, I feel that they need to drop the XIII universe(apart from Versus). Personally, I liked XIII, but I do not think it needed a sequel. They need to move on to new things. Or maybe just release Versus XIII already.

  • Talk about a lame ending...
  • I personally don't like this massive DLC thing they are going to do with this game.

  • the game is epic, the characters, epic, the storyline, epic, do i have to go on.
  • Wakka sure let himself go. Go back to making good Final Fantasy games, Square.
  • Isn't "to be continued" a bit misleading? Other games with multiple endings do not use such a thing, if i finished a game and saw that i'd def figure there was more to come.
  • we all know xiii-3 is coming.
  • It's a fantastic game so far, I intend to explore it at least a few times to really get a solid understanding of the story which while convoluted in how it is set out, isn't that confusing or weird.

  • Is it possible to spoil an ending if it doesnt make any sense?
  • Personally, I believe Final Fantasy has been squeezed of all entertainment it can give us. Their latest games just aren't as good.
  • They better release a XIII-3. If they don't we should launch a boycott.
  • Tch, and here I was hoping it would tie into Final Fantasy Versus XIII.
  • ...but they are totally making Final Fantasy XIII-3.
  • I hope that at some point in time, Square Enix releases a FF comparable to 12. 13 and on was a terrible departure from quality.
  • I dont think this is entirely true. I think we will probably see a xii-3 within the next couple of years, and if they can have a good story that ties the others together then that might not be a bad thing.
  • I smell a FFXIII-3 or a FFIV?
  • The only way "to be contiuned" ending is cool is if Doc Brown appears via a DeLorean and tells Serah he needs her help to save her kids.
  • Am I the only one both angered and insulted by this occurrence? Literally they are saying, "Yeah we are selling you a game that is incomplete, but you can buy DLC if you want to see an actual game ending.
