THQ CEO Takes Pay Cut, Layoffs Total 240 People

THQ CEO Brian Farrell will reduce his salary by fifty percent and layoffs from the publisher's recent restructuring total 240 people, according to a new filing with the SEC

THQ's new filing says Farrell will see his salary reduced from $718,500 to $359,250 for a one−year period beginning February 13, 2012. He will lose additional money if he is fired or resigns during that time. The company's board of directors will also have their salaries reduced by fifty percent for one year.

In January, THQ announced it was undergoing a restructuring plan that would see the publisher focus on core game and its digital business. The filing confirms the entire restructuring will see layoffs total 240 employees between now and September. These layoffs do not impact the publisher's five internal studios, which include Relic Entertainment, Volition, and Vigial Games.

"On January 26, 2012, Company's management initiated a plan of restructuring in connection with the updated business strategy in order to appropriately adjust the Company's operating expenses to better align with the expected revenues under the updated strategy," the filing reads. "The restructuring plan involves a realignment of the organizational structure resulting in reductions of up to 240 selling, general and administrative personnel worldwide.

"The majority of the restructuring plan is expected to be implemented by March 31, 2012, with the remainder completed by September 30, 2012."

THQ will hold an earnings call tomorrow where it's expected we'll hear more about this restructuring plan.

  • Really? I would be surprised if Farrell does not have a golden parachute option.
  • Ooooooohhhhhhhhh man.........

  • Wow, it seems like THQ was in a really tight spot. 240 employees? I feel really bad for all those people who just lost their jobs, and it's good that the people on top don't stay as high. 50% salary cut is good, even though $300,000 is till a ridiculously good pay. Best of wishes to all 240 people, and to a strong future for THQ
  • what games come from THQ? i'm to lazy to click on my home button and look on google for the answers
  • ...Darksiders...?
  • THQ's in a trouble,and it's good that the CEO understands and cares,but $300,000 is still big.
  • Gotta break down before you build up I guess.
  • That's dedication, most CEO's and higher-ups would just lay off more people before giving themselves a cut...bravo.
  • Good lord, no good news for THQ. Sounds like its really bad.
  • Mod
    $359,250, how will he survive?
  • Sucks for the people that lost their job, and it looks like THQ is on its way out they were just given a delisting warning for trading under NASDAQ's $1 minimum. I can see them folding within a year and and then there being a bidding war over the internal dev's that Microsoft and Sony will surely be a part of.
  • It's never good to hear about people losing jobs, there's enough of it going on, but this is the norm for this industry. However it's not the norm to see the CEO of a company this big or bigger, to take half a pay cut darn near. I hope THQ can turn things around, as once in a while they bring out a gem worth buying.
  • If THQ goes under I hope someone else picks up Vigil, Darksiders 2 must be released!!!!

  • Honestly, while I admire that he took such a huge paycut. With the situation they're in (which is mostly his fault to be fair) he should have deducted more. C'mon, your stock is going for 60 cents.
  • How many employees did they have to begin with?
  • I understand to some people, myself included, that 300,000 still sounds like alot but in all honesty for someone that is accustomed to earning 700,00 its a huge pay cut and will affect the way he lives and the things he can afford even though he makes alot he still has bills and those alone will take a pretty penny out of the 300,000. I feel like this was the best he could do without fearing that he could lose his house or have to sell his belongings.
  • When i think of the word "streamlined" I picture and athlete getting leaner: more muscle, less fat, more energy. It sounds like they pink slipped everyone that was involved in a kids game or unsuccessful title. It sucks they lost their posts and I wish them the best of luck in the future. The CEO taking a cut sounds like the best option he had. It is my hope that somehow, talking in terms of the athlete, this is simply a cramp or muscle pain, and that things will get better and stronger. I mean THQ is a good publisher. They released several good games last year and they sold moderately well along with solid ratings. And if something didn't go right, they should just see where things went wrong. Thats how good companies become great companies: they learn from errors and I don't mean unsuccessful titles. I just seriously don't want to see another company go because it never released another generic military shooter that featured a one word, bullet/grenade magnet special forces dude with an M4 and invincible armor that mowed down terrorists and russians for four hours to stop a nuclear bomb and a broken and shattered online. . First Midway, then Pandemic, then The Force Unleashed Team, and a few others i can't think of right now. It like gaming is dying just a little bit. That much talent gone. That much innovation and creativity vanished to some other non-gaming job. It really looks like Bobby K is winning. I'll say this: If THQ shuts, I put my PS3 controller down and power down my console for a long time. I couldn't stand to play games with that much creativity gone.
  • GOODBYE so long and thanks for the...saints row?

  • he should take a pay cut, its what you do if your company is broke, i just hope he can fix it.

  • so the people actually responsible for the state of the company continue to make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. While those in no way responsible, lose their jobs? Awesome >_>
