The Next Xbox Will Not Be Released In 2012

While not ruling out the possibility that a new Xbox console could be revealed at E3, a French Microsoft executive stated that the company will not release new hardware in 2012.

When asked to respond to rumors that a new Microsoft console was going to be unveiled at E3, Microsoft France marketing director Cedrick Delmas said, "We're in an industry that talks a lot, that likes telling stories. I am not convinced that things will happen this year. The Xbox 360's cycle is not over at all. The proof is that we haven't price cut this year. Afterward, what will happen at E3, it's still too early to say. What's certain is that there will be nothing new in 2012. If we wanted to counter Nintendo, we would have to be in a position to release something immediately, and that is not at all the case."

He continued, "We're not here to counter Nintendo and they're not here to fight the other manufacturers. Nintendo has put itself in a different cycle, it's going forward to its own rhythm, with success as we have seen with the Wii, and now it's their turn to present their innovation."

This seems to suggest that -- like Sony -- Microsoft is biding its time in regards to the next generation of consoles.

  • I hope the new xbox does not come out until 2014
  • So we do not know of 2013 and that was our guess. Reveal in E3 is not even known yet.
  • He conceded the Wii was a success... I wasn't expecting that. Not from a competitor anyway. Anyway, it's great that they don't feel bound to follow anyone. Do their own thing in their own time.
  • "...an French Microsoft executive..." Come on guys!
  • Wow what a shocker!
  • Good. I still feel like there is plenty of life in my old box. It'll be interesting to see what they'll do with a new system to justify purchasing a new console down the road though. Blu-Ray and better graphics only go so far, with me anyway. I don't even think there should be a new Xbox 360 entirely. Why not just come out with Xbox 360s with updated hardware over the years kind of like how the DS has evolved. Until 3D none of them sported monumental changes. For the next Xbox just make some upgrades here and there and keep the price competitive. Oh, and it would be a way to keep your XBL account, gamerscore and library without all the hassles of leaping into the next generation.
  • makes sense. While i am a nintendo fan (zelda all the way), the wii hasn't been the most amazing console. Yeah, we saw great games like skyward sword, brawl, mario galazy, but for the past little while the wii's been collecting dust... it was time for them to move on. Maybe now nintendo can get some proper 3rd party support for the WiiU like our friends over at sony and microsoft. glad to see microsoft doing well, i'm a big fan of the xbox too.
  • If the case is that they're taking their time to improve their next console, I'm all for it! This should be good news for people who value quality over quantity!
  • Good
  • Good, I like my 360. Maybe next year though...

  • Nintendo sucks
  • Not really surprising. Though I'd love a new console to come out soon, I want developers to have a little more to work with.  I'm betting 2013 or 2014 at the latest, I hope >.>.

  • Good, I'm still satisfied with my 360.
  • i hope it comes out in 2013 and nice to hear a price drop is coming for the 360. i might grab one again
  • 2014 sounds like a good assumption to me, sure I want a new console with some way better hardware, but I can wait a few more years. That sounds around the time when we will NEED new hardware.

  • Meh, companies have said many times in recent years that X wont happen and then it turns around and happens. These days saying "no comment" as is good as a confirmation for many, so many seemed to have turned to say no. Its not always true though, they just don't want to tip their hand. Though I must say, I didn't expect it to be released this year anyway, with Halo coming out.

  • Really unsurprised right there.

  • Well, PC gaming is becoming more and more appealing to do exclusively. The tech is old and dated, and I still can't believe this generation is begrudgingly holding on for dear life. Granted, some people are not ready for a next gen, but I could honestly care less about that. The gap is already getting to where it's impossible to ignore(compare Witcher 2 PC to console shots and Battlefield 3 PC vs console). I just wish this generation could be put out of its misery.
  • I hope that the next gen Xbox doesn't come out for a long time. I like this one.
  • Let's hope the new Xbox doesn't overheat so much
