Sony Likely To Be Last To Unveil Next-Gen System

In an interview with a French website, a Sony executive suggested that the company is in no hurry to announce the next PlayStation.

When asked about the company's next-gen plans in an interview with Le Point, Sony France's Philippe Cardon commented, "It's true that there are a lot of rumors, but I can't tell you anything. The Wii is under time pressure because it's in decline. As far as we're concerned, we're under a lot less pressure. We were the last to release the PS3, we will probably be the last to announce something."

Nintendo's Wii U is slated to release sometime this year, and it's widely speculated that Micrsoft is going to announce a new version of the Xbox at E3 2012.

  • I agree PS3 console remains an impressive and still has plenty of life left.
  • Sony needs time to see what everyone else is doing so they can copy it.
  • You mispelled Microsoft
  • Oh well. I guess the first time they waited...it was worth it in the long run?
  • What a relief! I want to enjoy this console to it's fullest. Besides, I only got it last year!
  • Well it's already ahead of the others in so many aspects.
  • That's cool, the longer they take the better it should be. They just need to release it at the same time as the competition this year.
  • I converted to PC gaming late last year and haven't looked back. I'm bummed I will need to pull out the XBox 360 to play ME3 with all previous ME data. New consoles will mean good things for PC gamers though since developers will be more willing to push equipment specs.
  • Sony doesn't really need to release a new console. There's so much the PS3 can do that it can't right now because of other consoles.
  • It makes sense how Sony will be last to unveil their next-gen system. First of all, the PS3 is the youngest console. Mrseve said that the PS3 has plenty of life which is true. Also, Sony probably wants to make some more money from the PS3 and Vita so they can use that money to copy Nintendo or Microsoft. Maybe they won't copy them, which would be weird if they don't, but it could happen.
  • I am guessing it will be unveiled at E3 2013

  • This is good. I've only had my PS3 for two years, and the longer it lasts the better.
  • I could care less when next gen of consoles roll out, but I hope this doesn't mean Sony will be last to realese their console to the market. Falling behind again along with the PS3's initial pricetag surely slowed launch sales. Hopefully Sony doesn't fault with the PS4 launch & it comes out strong.
  • :o

  • Perhaps things were different in Europe, but the PS3 launched several days before the Wii as I recall. Not that it changes anything. I would agree that the PS3 has the most life left in it of all current consoles.
  • Well, that's what we were expecting...

  • To be honest, im kind of disappointed my this. This could have been an excellent business move by sony.
  • I'm still waiting on the rumors that the next Xbox won't play used games...

I really want confirmation on this, cause if it's true, I won't be buying the next Xbox. Unless the games are 20 bucks cheaper, which let's face it, isn't gonna happen.
  • phew, good. now I feel less pressured trying to fill up my new 320 gb ps3 slim, that i got for christmas.
Another good thing about this is, they save the best for last.
  • I hope it's at least a couple more years until the next-gen playstation. I've been enjoying my PS3 quite a bit.
