Netflix Drops Game Rental Plans

Movie rental and streaming company Netflix has announced that it is stopping previously announced plans to rent video games by mail.

The company had previously announced that it would be offering game rentals at the same time it stated its intention to split its physical and streaming movie rental services. Eventually this plan was dropped, and now it looks like renting games is also joining it on the scrap heap.

So the next time Netflix announces something, best to take it with a grain of salt.

  • Their shares are way back up so I'm happy. I haven't rented video games since the days of Blockbuster and my SNES, and I cannot imagine doing it now. I think the collector in me appreciates having physical media that is mine alone.
  • so are developers okay with gamefly or what?

  • BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I guess it wont matter if yesterdays article was true and the NextBox will not play used games. I guess at that point GameFly will go bust also. To bad. As much as I would like to I simply cannot afford to own every game I want to play. I can barely make due with my GameFly membership.
  • One other thing they dropped but never mentioned was having new releases. I don't know if there are exclusive deals floating around with other movie streaming services that prevent Netflix from getting them, but the only new movies Netflix has for streaming are indie and made for TV.
  • Use to be when you rented games from the local store they were always scratched up and you'd swear someone wiped their face with it, so I never liked renting games since. Wonder if Gamefly's discs are in similar condition?
  • They just completely screwed themselves up with that stupid Qwikster crap.

  • Well that stinks.

  • Good. Now maybe they can focus on getting some better movies for instant streaming.
  • On a related note, did anyone else get that stupid invitation to that class action lawsuit against between Wal-mart and Netflix?
  • Geez, my faith is lost on this company.  Too bad there 'Watch Instantly' service rocks.

  • I hate netflix. Poor choice in new titles, and not nearly enough HD content available.

  • All that matters is the excellent streaming service.  I hardly ever watch proper television anymore.

  • Netflix needs to stop doing this

  • they should really just change back to what they were doing before all this crap  them customers will be happy and they would be somewhat redeamed

  • If I didn't get Netflix free for life, I wouldn't have it. Thankfully I get for free.
  • I heard that they plan on dropping DVDs completely in the near future.

  • well thats a bummer

  • Boooooooo...Netflix cannot be trusted.  I will probably drop them now as I was only hanging on to my crappy selection of streaming for the supposed addition of game rentals.

  • this doesnt even bother me.

  • Unless of course they announce a price increase
