New Fortnite Details Should Appeal To Minecraft Fans

by Jeff Marchiafava on Dec 12, 2011 at 07:47 AM

Epic Games only showed a brief teaser of its new creation-oriented title Fortnite during the VGAs, but already we're learning more about the project via Twitter.

Many gamers walked away from the Fortnite trailer wondering if the project will be anything like Mojang's ever-popular Minecraft, and it appears so. Lee Perry is the project lead on Fortnite, and has been answering questions via his Twitter account ever since the reveal, including the confirmation that Minecraft is an inspiration for the team. Here are some of the quotes from his Twitter account:

"Happy to see #Fortnite announced, it's been a blast working on it. Although it's only been a few short months, there's so much to it!"

"We aren't talking platform or pricing model yet. I can say it's much more like Minecraft than the other titles mentioned so far."

"A good trailer example is the building being blown up for resources, yeah, not trailer fakery or scripted events when in game."

"I see lots of questions asking if #fortnite is freeform construction. It is. It's not scripted or just boarding up existing structures."

"#fortnite and it stands to reason if you can build a world, anything can be destroyed. That's about all I'm tossing out there for now :)"

"...Minecraft let's you build ANYTHING, we are focusing on constructing 'buildings' specifically."

"'Chance of weapon crafting/traps, lvl system, underground exploration, Boss fights, team survival mode, rare loot?' Chances? High."

"...#Minecraft was an inspiration for sure."

I was hesitant to read too much into the trailer with regards to whether Epic was trying to create a Minecraft-like experience on consoles, but Perry's informal Q&A has me intrigued. Epic promises to have more information soon, but you can always try bugging Perry with your pressing questions until then.
