Final Fantasy Producer Wants A New Game Every Year Or Two

After the lengthy wait for Final Fantasy XIII and a similarly seemingly never-ending grind toward Final Fantasy Versus XIII, some FF fans are understandably surprised that Final Fantasy XIII-2 is already almost ready for release. If FF XIII-2 producer Yoshinori Kitase has his way, this faster turn-around will become the norm in the series' future.

Speaking to Game Reactor, Kitase pointed to the Call of Duty, Battlefield, and Assassin's Creed franchises as ones that Square Enix should be trying to emulate:

"...they make a new game in 1-2 years. That is something we need to follow up, because that seems to be the best way to keep our fans interested and attracted to the franchise."

Kitase owns up that they took too long finishing the first Final Fantasy XIII, although he doesn't provide a timeline or strategy for how Square Enix will improve the turn-around in the future. He also goes on to admit later in the interview that the publisher still has no updates on when we'll see more about the long-in-development Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

Do you think that more Final Fantasy releases more often is a good focus for Square as a company or should it be putting its energy elsewhere?

  • The best way to keep your fans interested is to take your time and make an excellent game. Preferably not as long as XIII has taken, but when they're ready so they can be a quality product. At least that's the way I think about it.
  • By else where do you mean kingdom hearts...also quality over quantity, faster isn't always better.
They should give each game time to grow and not come out like it's another product.
Sega decided to work on multiple games at one time and having different teams make each game so one can start working for 4-2 years while the other(s)can put one or two out each year.
    so year 1= big(Main) 2=small(spinoff) 3= medium(sequel or other title) 4= big(sequel or new main)
  • you want a new game every year or two well SO WOULD WE get on it square enix

  • Final Fantasy becoming like CoD in terms of releases is the last thing I want to see happen to the franchise. I'd be much happier if they focused on making better games
  • You mean Kingdom Hearts 3 right? ... One can only dream

EDIT: Also the last thing I want to see is another franchise following the activision way.
  • Quality over quantity. Ubisoft, Activision, and EA have the teams to make an Assassins every year or two. But i don't know if square does.

  • Waiting a handful of years is what used to make Final Fantasy so worth it. The sheer excitement of hearing Final Fantasy VIII was about to be released was just amazing, and at the time, surreal. I'd say Elder Scrolls perfects the waiting/hype game perfectly.

Let's face it, Battlefield and Call of Duty get away with continuous (re)releases as they are built on multiplayer. These games wait just long enough for the servers to become stagnant with maxed out accounts, then rehash the formula with more unlockables. This works great, but RPGs are about the experience.

If the experience isn't well-done, or if it feels rushed, this will hurt the quality of the experience. [joke]You guys remember Final Fantasy XIV?

I didn't make a mistake; there is no closing tags as this will be a ever-running joke with no end.
  • So I'm guessing FFXV will have a lot of set pieces and scripted fights and only take about 8 hours to beat? 3 of those hours will be cut scenes and can not be skipped. $15 dungeon packs that will have 2 dungeons and some new gear.

I'm pretty sure I would rather Square just say we are not making another FF game instead of this method of killing a once great series.

  • Goodbye good Final Fantasy games.
  • How about quality over quantity or better yet remakes of ff5-ff12 (skipping 11 of course and keeping 5 and 6 as sprites ), Im pretty sure Im not the only one who would buy every..... single... one
  • Throwing a game out every year is not interesting. I've given up on Assassin's Creed because they aren't putting in any creativity anymore. It's just a bunch of rehashes. And don't even get me started on Call of Duty. *clenches fist in malicious anger*
  • They should make Chrono Break

  • Every year? It may be successful, but does it really always render top-quality work?

  • So do I.

  • I don't want a new game every year, I just want Final Fantasy Versus XIII already! >_<

  • And the Final Fantasy franchise falls further into oblivion. Congrats Square-Enix, you've officially killed Final Fantasy for me.

  • "Do you think that more Final Fantasy releases more often is a good focus for Square as a company or should it be putting its energy elsewhere?"

I think they should be putting their energy into actually making good games that are attractive and story driven. If SE's goal is to emulate Call of Duty, Battlefield, and Assassin's Creed, My faith is going to be seriously shaken (much worse than when I played FFX-2). I've always seen Square as a producer of quality games, and not cash-grab-quick-pummel-you-with-the-same-game-over-and-over company.

SE has a great many franchises that they "could" fire off, Final fantasy one year, Kingdom Hearts the next, Chrono series, The "Mana" Series, I hope they do this instead of just FF over and over again. I hold Square in the same regard to Bethesda, as in I've always liked both companies games. They both release amazing RPG's, and I will always enjoy them. But, If Bethesda fired off an Elder Scrolls game every year I'm almost positive it would severely drain on the players after a few short releases and the glitches would be taken much more seriously.

Much the same can be said for Square's turn based systems used in almost all of their games. Not everyone wants to play the same game over and over again. This does not mean I don't like turn based games, much the contrary, I just don't want to see FF become a run and gunner.

*steps down off my soap box*
  • i don't know bro, just give me versus XIII please. i want that game so bad, it looks so awesome

  • So basically we can expect to see more XII-3, XII-4, XII-5 and so on.
  • Square can bring me back with two simple steps: Finish Versus XIII and give me some kind of solid release date and at the very least announce/show me something about a Kingdom Hearts III (no more side stories).
