Uncharted 3 Ships 3.8M Units

Sony said today it shipped 3.8 million copies of Uncharted 3 to retailers globally in the first day. The company has not provided actual sales numbers to consumers at this time, however.

It's worth noting that while shipped numbers give a good indication of excitement for the game at retail, it doesn't give a full picture. Electronic Arts announced last month it shipped 10 million copies of Battlefield 3 in the first week it, yet the publisher actually sold about half of that.

“Uncharted 3 is a blockbuster and these incredible sales figures reflect that," said Nick Caplin, Head of Communications at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. "Consumers are clearly as eager to play the game as critics were to heap praise upon it, and the team at Naughty Dog deserve this fantastic reception at retail."

[Update: A SCEA representative reconfirmed to Game Informer these sales are shipped, not sold.]

  • Ok, I'm going to be selfish and use this first post not to troll or anything, but to try to talk about why, after beating Uncharted, I think its a great game, but not nearly as good as the reviews are, and certainly not worthy of the 10/10 from IGN. It won't even be long, because it comes down to this: the game has a terrific story, amazing acting and animations, superb graphics, and truly stunning cinematic moments and, the cutscenes are just stellar. Really, incredible.

But, and this is the reason I don't really enjoy the GAME. It's not really a very good video game. The parts that I watch are infinitely more fun than the parts that I play. And, because the cutscenes and story and characters are so superb and believable, it destroys my belief in Drake in a character as soon as I play. The guy in those cutscenes is not the guy who literally murders HUNDREDS of guys with his bare hands and guns constantly. It just makes no sense. It doesn't break the game, it doesn't make it a bad game, but it does make it something far from a 10/10. It makes no sense. And when Nate, in the cutscenes, doesn't even allude to the fact that he just beat up ten guys with his bare hands in, they just play it totally straight, it creates a tonal disparity that I couldn't bridge. And on top of that, the tonal gap wouldn't be so bad if the gameplay that involved killing hundreds of bad guys was super fun, but to me it felt incredibly dated. It became intensely formulaic, right down to the oversized goons who you have to literally press Triangle, then square a bunch of times after you kick them in the nuts three times to win. That's not 10/10 gameplay in my opinion.

And it's those two reasons that I think there is a big gap between people loving uncharted and people not understanding the praise. I loved playing the game, but those things almost killed it for me. I encourage a dialogue about this here. Thanks for reading.
  • Good sign. ^_^

  • wow why does sony always fudge their numbers like this? shipped =/= sales... why can't we get the sales figures?
  • I am 1 of 3.8 million.  It was a great game and deserves all the praise that was hyped. It felt shorter than U2 but some of the scenes absolutely blew me away.

  • Un2 train > Un3 plane Enjoyed it but last one was better
  • great sign. i bought one, and im loving every minute of it. I'll continue to play multiplayer and another campaign playthrough until games like Zelda, mario, and assassins creed come out.

  • Wait, other reputable news sites are reporting that these are "sales" numbers, not "shipped". Some even specifically point out the fact that these are not shipped numbers, but actual sales. Who is right?

Even Nick Caplin's quote in the article specifically says "sales".

"“Uncharted 3 is a blockbuster and these incredible sales figures reflect that,"

    UPDATE

I just double checked, and these are indeed SALES, not shipped. This is coming directly from Sony as other articles, like the one on IGN, have updated themselves with verification that these are not shipped, but sales numbers.

    UPDATE 2

OK, now I am confused. I've got two websites confirming that Sony has said these are "Sold" numbers, not shipped. But Gameinformer saying Sony has confirmed to them that these are shipped numbers, not sold.... Here is the quote from IGN's story.

"Despite some confusion this morning about whether the number represented units shipped or units sold, Sony has now confirmed to IGN that Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception sold 3.8 million copies worldwide on its first day in stores. "

    Here is Gamespots quote

"Gamers have bought into Drake's Deception by the millions. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe today announced that the PlayStation 3-exclusive Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception posted day-one global sales of 3.8 million copies."

    Which one is it!?!?!?!!?
  • I liked Uncharted 3 but I thought the story wasn't as strong as 2's. 2 was for all intents and purposes, epic and mind-blowingly cinematic, whereas I felt that 3 had more of a "go here, then this odd event will happen and you'll end up here". It just didn't seem to mesh as well for me. Talbot in particular was a problem that never got solved for me. It seemed like the guy possessed almost supernatural powers but they never even discuss how any of that happened. For me, that sort of not knowing doesn't make it interesting, it just comes across as confusing and lazy on the storytelling. Overall though, it's not a bad game, it's plenty of fun, but I found myself comparing it to Uncharted 2 and in that regard I was disappointed.
  • Simply the best action game on the market right now. No other game come close to Uncharted.

  • It's been confirmed by Sony that 3.8mil equals the number SOLD not just shipped. But anyway, I'm happy to be a part of that number; U3 is a great game and I'm already looking forward to U4! Congrats to Naughty Dog, they deserve it!
  • Great game, not as good as two, but better than one. I beat it in one day, which I think it was shorter than the first two, God of War 3 had this problem. It has sold well I'm sure, but the holiday season is packed with so many games that we'll likely see the sales increase over time rather than selling in bulk like say Modern Warfare 3. Great game though.
  • Congrats to all at Naughty Dog, well done! :D

  • I got a copy at my house and am currently playing Uncharted 3!!!!! Totally think Among Thieves is the best one so far though.

  • I haven't played this game yet, but judging by the reviews, I'd say it probably deserves it.

  • Uncharted 3 is a great game, but honestly it's starting to be predictable. I mean how many times is Nate going to jump on something and it breaks as he lands? It was surprising the first 10 times, but it feels like everytime you jump somewhere Nate falls :-\

  • Uncharted 3 had better multiplayer, but Uncharted 2 had better single player

  • Haha, if it is actually 3.8 million sold, then Reilly lost his bet with Greg Miller. Hence he won't admit that it's sold not shipped, and IGN is saying that it's sold not shipped. (joking....kind of)
  • IGN claims the sales were 3.8 million.  The shipments, I assume, were more.

  • Am I the only one that thought Uncharted 3 was the best of the series? I freaking loved it!! It was a little slow at the start but just got bigger and bigger and bigger. I felt like the set pieces were the best I had seen in any game. Definitely my favourite game of all time. Until and hour or so when I start playing skyrim that is! Well done Naughty Dog!
