Pachter: Modern Warfare 3 Will Double Battlefield 3 Sales

by Jeff Marchiafava on Oct 24, 2011 at 09:24 AM

Based on sales of previous titles in Activision's and EA's popular military shooter franchises, you don't have to be a fortune teller to predict that Modern Warfare 3 will outsell Battlefield 3 this year. Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter is taking his predictions one step further, providing his own expected sales numbers for both upcoming sequels.

Speaking with Forbes, Pachter predicts that Modern Warfare 3 will sell 16 million copies this year, as opposed to Battlefield 3's estimated 8 million. Pachter also expects that lead to grow in 2012, with MW 3 selling another 8 million next year, and Battlefield 3 selling an extra 2 million.

As for console gamers, Pachter believes many players will end up getting both titles. “I’d guess that around half of the console copies of Battlefield 3 will be bought by people who also buy Modern Warfare 3, so around 2 to 3 million will buy both,” says Pachter. “I don’t see much cannibalization of the titles.”

We'll find out if Pachter is right soon enough; Battlefield 3 invades stores tomorrow, and Modern Warfare 3 will release on November 8. To get a sense of what to expect, check out our review of the PC version of Battlefield 3. A review of the console versions will be available later in the day.
