GameStop Giving Used Batman Buyers Free Catwoman Codes

Yesterday it was confirmed Batman: Arkham City requires players to input a code that comes with each new copy of the game in order to play the Catwoman sections. A report from Kotaku today, however, suggests GameStop is giving that code away for free to used buyers as well.

An purported internal e-mail says, “Customers who purchases a new or pre-owned copy of Batman: Arkham City will receive the Catwoman Bundle DLC.” It notes the code will be printed on the back of the receipt

A similar situation happened with Mortal Kombat, with Warner Bros. allowing GameStop to give online codes away for free to pre-owned customers of the game.

GameStop has not returned requests for comment at this time. We’ll update this story once we hear back.

Update: "Customers who purchase a new or pre-owned copy of Batman: Arkham City will receive the Catwoman Bundle DLC," a GameStop representative told us in an e-mail.

  • Gotta feeling it will be a while before a used copy is available. Nice to see Gamestop coming through on this.
  • Well that's pretty decent of them, at least that will help out the people that hold off for used copies of games.

  • Interesting, I guess this is gamestops response to the used game sales strategy.  If it benefits us, then great!

  • It seems Gamestop and the Publishers are going to war now...
  • Everybody wins! I'm sure if this is true, that Gamestop would have to buy the codes in order to provide them with the used game purchase. Now everybody go and purchase the game, and enjoy some awesome villain butt kicking!

    When it releases, of course.

EDIT: Guess it can't be helped. Gamers are going to be pissed off regardless. So much anger in the gaming world nowadays. Oh well, I'm getting it new either way. I like my games in perfect condition, when I buy them.
  • I wouldn't see much of a reason to get a used copy so soon considering you'd only save $5 or so (which Rocksteady won't see a penny from).
  • Okay problem solved.
  • Sometimes Gamestop just surprises the heck out of me with something like this.

  • I disagree, I think there should be incentives for buying the game new so that the developers actually get to see profits from that transaction. I really don't want to see the industry go exclusively to digital distribution but but if developers can't do something about used game sales then they most certainly will. Not long ago, someone (I forget who) was talking about how they sold about 2 million copies of a game and yet there were 3 million consoles with achievements for that game. That's millions of dollars that they won't get to invest into their next project.
  • Does this mean Warner Bros. gets anything from the Catwoman DLC or not?
  • Thats pretty cool. If I am not able to get it right away (I'll be depressed) I'll still be able to get the full game experience when I buy it used. Awesome.

  • Hold on... if the company allows this then why even have it in the first place?
  • Go GameStop. Way to step up and help your consumers.
  • What is the point of Online Pass then, Warner Bros.? I have to assume that this is just Gamestop being dicks, realizing that they have to do something to make used games look attractive again. F*** them.

Only stupid gamers buy used. If you're strapped for cash - THINK! Buy it, NEW, a few weeks later. On Amazon, nearly every game drops to $30 within a month. And buying used supports developers, not those a**holes at Gamestop who don't do anything, yet profit fantastically off of these developers' hard work.

Gamestop does something underhanded every time anyone reports on them. Remember the Deus Ex/OnLive debacle? What a wretched company - how can anyone support these buttholes?

    Stop being stupid, gamers.
  • this is pretty dumb people should just pay $10 more for the new game and support developers
  • there are two sides to this. The plus side is people who don't buy the game right away can still have the full experience of the game. But then negative side to this is that the developers wont see the income from the game purchase only that of gamestop buying the codes from them.
  • Gamestop is not Santa Claus here. Warner, and most likely Rocksteady, will still receive their share of the used games sales like they wanted in the first place. What Gamestop is doing is eating those $10 instead of the consumer, hoping that since it is the only company doing so, people will come to it for the used games purchases. It makes business sense, the developers still get their share of the used market, and the consumer is left with a situation where that is not an issue. However, you have to understand that for this to happen, publishers had to force the hand of retailers, otherwise they would still get nothing out of the used market. It's the ability to evolve with the market that keeps companies going, and Gamestop is finding a way. Publishers and developers are not the devil for wanting to be compensated for something they produced.
  • Judging by the comments, the amount of stupid gamers has barely decreased. Dumb fu**ers - buy games NEW, later. They're SO MUCH CHEAPER ON AMAZON! And they're still NEW. Just wait a few weeks, you dumb fu**s. Be patient and responsible, and support developers. Stop looking for Gamestop's infamous useless $5 off. God, you're all such tools - anyone who supports Gamestop's doing this are just f***ing tools. STOP BUYING USED, FROM GAMESTOP, DA*MIT!
  • They probably purchase the codes at a reduced rate. The publishers see some money and gamestop makes some sales on used games it's a win-win situation and good compromise if this is how it works. In the end it doesn't matter to me... I have it pre-ordered.
  • good for them!
