World Of Warcraft Patch 4.2 Launches, Unlimited Free Trial Now Available

by Phil Kollar on Jun 28, 2011 at 10:20 AM

The latest update for World of Warcraft's fiery Cataclysm expansion is live today, and it brings a number of major updates for the game as well as a dangerous new free trial option for those not yet converted to the cult of Warcraft.

For those who have been eagerly awaiting new content, patch 4.2 (a.k.a. Rage of the Firelands) contains a new raid, the start of a new PvP season, some UI upgrades, and a quest line to uncover a legendary staff for damage-focused spellcasters. That last one alone is almost enough to pull me back into the game.

If you're one of those increasingly rare individuals who hasn't yet been exposed to World of Warcraft, Blizzard may have a deal that's too good to be true. The publisher has removed the old 10- and 14-day trials for the game, replacing them with the "World of Warcraft Starter Edition" -- an unlimited free trial that lets new users play characters up to level 20.

In addition, Blizzard has announced that the core $19.99 World of Warcraft purchase now comes with the game's first expansion, The Burning Crusade, packed in for no extra charge. Anyone who has purchased the base WoW game previously will now be able to access the Burning Crusade content without paying for the privilege.
