Report: THQ Shuts Down Homefront Developer

Kaos Studios, the developer behind THQ's Homefront, is being shuttered by the publisher. That doesn't mean Homefront is dead, however; work on the next entry in the series will continue at THQ's Montreal studio.

Word of the studio closure first leaked when a Kaos employee, Zach Wilson, tweeted: "That's what i'm hearing, that Kaos is shutting down, details to come. Most of the devs already have jobs with new studios anyways." Wilson followed up with: "It'll be interesting to see how THQ corporate spins this one."

When THQ confirmed the shutdown, we got to see exactly how corporate is spinning it. In a statement to Gamasutra, the publisher said: "THQ continues its strategy of aligning the best industry talent with the company’s marquee franchises. The Montreal studio will take over product development and overall creative management for the Homefront franchise. The Montreal studio actively collaborated with Kaos on Homefront."

This probably has something to do with Homefront's unimpressive reviews and the fact that it caused THQ's stock to take a dip following release. Even so, we never like seeing talented individuals lose their jobs, and we wish the best of luck to the former Kaos team.

  • As soon as I finish sending thistip, Gamasutra ruins it! Thanks a lot!>:( Anyways, I was shocked they closed them down but can blame them. Remember the layoffs Rockstar had because of the sales for Red Dead Redemption? That game sold a ton though. But seriously, what was THQ expecting? To sell a bajillion copies like CoD?

  • *** that sucks

  • lol ouch. i dont get thq. they saythe will push and support metro last light more than the previous one, WITH MORE COMMERCIALS etc. wow good way to rise THE QUALITY of a game. Advertising is so much more important this day. sadly.

  • gameplay sucked but good story
  • Hmmm. I am not sure what to think. did the game suffer because THQ did not allow Kaos the time or resources to make it shine, or did Kaos have the resources and still not deliver. I actually liked this game, it could have been better, the story was cool and if they had focused more on that it would have been much better in my opinion. Whatever the cause, I hope everybody has minimal disruption to their familes and that they can get jobs real soon. Good Luck former Kaos staff members!
  • Too bad really. The multiplayer is really quite fun.  The poor MM at launch and campaign hurt.

  • Pretty short lived studio, bummer. But they only made two games, Frontlines and Homefront, both of which amounted to "C" grades as far as game ratings. I never played either of those games, although I plan on renting Homefront for my PS3 sometime.

Still I hope the all those people find jobs in the industry.

  • Despite the stock dip, the game made THQ a substantial amount of money considering that last I heard it had sold 3+ million copies. That's kind of a, "*** you," from THQ right there. Oh well, outside or Darksiders I couldn't give two *** for THQ and the games it publishes.
  • HomeFront2 needs:1.better smoother gameplay 2.Improved graphics 3.Better storyline HomeFronts wasnt bad but couldve been better 4. last but not least Improved more faster action multiplayer. Now take that Montreral and you have a hit.
  • Homefront's fiction was compelling. The gameplay and scripting that went with it was mediocre. The graphics were the worst I've seen on a 360 to date. Thing's felt really responsive though so many they were trying to get input lag as low as possible. Even so, Rage is getting input lag down to one full frame(17ms) and it's just gorgeous. I can understand that they don't have Carmak but still, the disparity between the two is night and day and I found myself having trouble at time telling the difference between an enemies head and the ridiculous aliasing on objects on a 42" plasma.

  • Still need to borrow Homefront from my friend

  • That's kind of bogus :/ Homefront has a good groundwork laid for a much improved sequel... I hope that sending the project off to a different team will only be for the best.

  • Ship nearly 3 million copies and still close them down?

How much money did they go into marketing for this game?

  • I was never interested in this game but I thought Homefront did ok sales wise. 1.8 million copies across all platforms according to vgchartz.

I guess THQ thought it would be the next big franchise. It is a shame to quit on it so early. The Premise is actually good. The execution was just so-so. I would have given them another chance and bring in some different creative talent.
  • Not a very good game anyways.

  • This is a really hard situation.  I feel terrible for the people who are out of work.  Homefront was not a good game but you can't always blame the developer.  I have a feeling that THQ had as much if not more to blame for the failure of this game than Kaos did.  I wish the Kaos employees all the best out there!

  • Was it my imagination, or were they talking about probable DLC and possible sequel(s)?

  • Really,c'mon guys homefront multiplayer was fun
  • As of 24/03/11 i.e. 1 week after release THQ advised that they had sold over 1 million units of Homefront.  If that's not a successful launch of a new franchise I don't know what is.  As such, it's disgraceful that they thanked their staff for this success by closing their studio!  The big publishers really don't seem to care about the welfare of the people making money for them.

  • That sucks. I wish the Kaos guys all the best. Granted, Homefront's singleplayer was not the best I've played by a long shot, but it was passable. It felt rushed, and I don't really think that was Kaos's fault, more THQ forcing them to get it out. The multiplayer, however, was some of the most fun I've had in recent memory. Overall, I enjoyed Homefront, was looking forward to how Kaos would evolve the franchise. Very disappointed with THQ at the moment.
