Nintendo Servers Hacked

On the eve of some big announcements at E3, Nintendo reveals its servers were hacked a few weeks ago.

Nintendo says that its servers were targeted in an online attack, but also says that no customer information was accessed or stolen. Nintendo claims the attack came a few weeks ago, but declined to offer more details on timing.

"There were no third-party victims. But it is a fact there was some kind of possible hacking attack," said Nintendo spokesperson Ken Toyoda said earlier today. ""We are always working to make sure our systems are secure."

Claiming responsibility, the hacker group commonly known as Lulz Security (also known as Lulzsec) is claiming responsibility. To authenticate its claims, the group posted the contents of what it claims is a Nintendo config file at Pastebin. On the LulzSec Twitter page, the group clarified some of its intentions: "We're not targeting Nintendo. We like the N64 too much - we sincerely hope Nintendo plugs the gap. This is just for lulz. <3"

The attack on Nintendo comes on the heels of far more serious assaults on Sony. This marks the first time Nintendo has been the subject of such attacks.  We have contacted Nintendo for comment, and will update if we hear anything in return.

  • Gottem.

  • I need a new mouse.
  • OKAY.This is enough.

LulzSec I'll be lulzing while you're in jail.
  • First sony now nintendo. Whats next microsoft?
  • get x box now
  • "Claiming responsibility, the hacker group commonly known as Lulz Security (also known as Lulzsec) is claiming responsibility." Next time, they'll be deadly serious next time.
  • Oh ***. I think that we all know who is next, thought I hope that it never comes true.
  • No more political cause? Now its just for lulz? This is getting ridiculous.
  • Next M$ is going to announce they've been hacked.
  • LulzSec? They should just hack themselves apart for having such a stupid name.
And by their logic, Nintendo could say, "Piss off, hackers" and they wouldn't attacked by them for more than "lulz" because they made N64. Morons.
  • ok now its microsofts turn *looks at bill gates*.
  • God****ing****it! If there's a flood of hacks on the other two systems I'm going to be pissed!

  • Eh, no harm no foul. It just let Nintendo know where to beef up their security. Often times people pay for that kind of service

  • I wonder why it took so long for Nintendo to say that they've been hacked. Or rather, "some kind of possible hacking attack."
  • A few weeks ago?! That's uh... a bit of a wait, eh Nintendo? Good thing no customer stuff was taken, or they'd be in worse condition than Sony. These "lulsec" guys are starting to get on my nerves. I'm sure they aren't even legit hackers, and are just making fun of these situations.
  • this isn't good or bad. these people could have taken millions of dollars of information, but it told nintendo to highten security.
  • Well, at least they're confessing. Plus, everyone likes the N64.
  • Crap. Now Microsoft needs to be careful...
  • Again with the Lulzsec! Same guys who released millions of Sony usernames and passwords. Also I really hate their name.
  • Lulzsec is pretty darn confident in their own security, aren't they? Their mission to expose insecure systems is one I actually agree with, but it's going to come back to bite them eventually.
