Miyamoto Confirms New Nintendo Console, Pricing And Release Rumors Surface

The father of Super Mario Bros. and Zelda has confirmed that Nintendo is producing a new console. He dropped the news today while responding to a volley of questions during an event in London. New rumors have also surfaced regarding the console’s release date, pricing, and hardware specs.

Miyamoto Speaks

According to Edge, after asking his interrogators to discontinue questioning, Miyamoto said “Even when the Wii launched we were developing new hardware, work on 3DS had already started. It’s a matter of when we announce it.”

When asked whether the new Nintendo console would be announced at this E3, he said “Please wait. Be patient until we decide.”

Shigeru Miyamoto's confirmation has the Game Informer office excited. Now we’re just waiting for more info, but not patiently.

  • Cool. The fact that it may release this year and it will look like a modern SNES makes me excited, not to mention the other things it'll feature.
  • i was worried about this sony and microsoft are going to follow now i'm going have to upgrade ):
  • E3 is going to be exciting!

  • This is going to be a very odd console entry. I really thought this console generation would last longer than the standard, but I am curious to see what Nintendo brings to the table and whether this will make Microsoft and Sony take action.

Still, Nintendo really needs to change the way they handle online and third party software with this release. But, Nintendo has always innovated the industry and will still continue to do so...even if their third party and online suck.
  • Welcome to the Next Gen Console Race Nintendo! Took them long enough lol : D
  • Oh gee I can't wait for E3!! sure wish I could go to E3 thats for sure

  • I wonder if they will use blu-ray so microsoft will be forced to use it because they don't want to be the only console to not have it and do you mean the original xbox or original xbox 360. If it's original xbox what the heck Japan was complaining about the original xbox being to big and if they get excited about another giant box what the heck!
  • A Modern SNES! That's wonderful; and I would like some of the classics to go with it.
  • A little pricey for it being a nintendo console but its packed with power and if it has a nice hd display controller that makes up for it.

  • I am so excited! I can't wait!

  • Wow, I *might* buy an nintendo console now

  • $400 for a nintendo system? Not this year! xD
  • Holy crow.  Look, I just need E3 to happen so we can get this ball rolling.  I need to see it in action and is that Japan October/November or Global?  Because if it is, I'm going to need to start saving up some coin if this is looking as great as it sounds.  I'd think this year if the new Zelda is coming to both systems.  Yeah, come on E3, let's get this talky-talk all over with.

  • You mean October-November this year?? Wow! That's awesome, way sooner than the late 2012 we heard before.

  • I'm hopeful that Sony and Microsoft don't rush to put out a new console for a few years. As much as I disagree with people talking about how important graphics are, I do appreciate that almost all of the big third party games aren't possible on the Wii, so I think this move is necessary for Nintendo. They're missing out on a lot of money by not having Call of Duty, Elder Scrolls, Grand Theft Auto, etc. on their system. I'd like this generation to last a little bit longer because the games are so good right now, and a new generation seems to mean a bunch of crap launch games and time spent waiting for developers to figure out the new systems. Also, assuming I buy this, I don't want to have to invest in another system for a while.
  • "Size of original Xbox, looks like modern SNES" Yay! Nintendo is bringing cartridges back!
  • I am very excited at the fact that there might be the first legitimate Nintendo console since the 90's. But I am horrifically scared that Sony and Microsoft will both drop details on their new projects (you'd be stupid to think they they don't have them close to being finished and just waiting for the right time) at E3 and that by the end of 2011/ Q2 2012, we won't have a whole new batch of consoles that I will miss out on the first 3 years of.
  • Wow. Something tells me that this will have Microsoft and Sony announce new consoles, and thus begin the next generation of consoles...maybe.
