Mass Effect Goes Anime

When you play Mass Effect, you're in control of Commander Shepard's destiny. But the galaxy is full of stories that don't involve Shepard, and fans will soon have a chance to watch one of them unfold, since BioWare and EA have inked a deal to create an anime feature film set in the Mass Effect universe.

According to EA's press release, the Mass Effect anime will be handled by Funimation, and deal with "an epic science fiction adventure set in a vast universe filled with dangerous alien life and mysterious, uncharted planets."

While the specific storyline hasn't been revealed, the release quotes Mass Effect executive producer Casey Hudson as saying: "Over the last few years, we have revealed different pieces of the Mass Effect world through different media. Extending the story through an anime medium is another amazing opportunity for us.” This seems to indicate that the movie will explore some new territory (rather than retelling the events of previous Mass Effect games). Production on the movie has already begun, and it is currently scheduled to release in summer 2012.

Also, if you're a Mass Effect fan and you haven't checked out our the image for our latest magazine cover, you should probably do something about that.

  • I love Mass Effect, so I'll probably watch it.

  • I  hope it is not like thoose two Dead Space movies.

  • I hope the animation is better than the Dead Space movies.

  • That is P to the imp!

  • More awesome sauce to me!

  • I love anime. The only problem is, there hasn't been a great one (movie or series) since the 90s. If this can be on the level of the classics (Akira, Ninja Scroll, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, etc.), it will be amazing. And the ME IP certainly has the potential to be that good. We shall see.
  • Sounds good, I'll definitely check it out.

  • I'm crying tears, none of them out of joy :'(

  • AWESOME

  • anime...not the biggest fan but because of how much i love Mass Effect i will probably watch it.

  • how bout a live action movie, eh? i'll still watch it tho. can't miss out on mass effect

  • Er... okay. I guess it could be cool if they don't try to use the terrible writing that plagues the majority of anime these days. If they make it serious like Gantz, Speed Grapher,  etc, then it might actually be pretty good.

  • Once again, two of my favorite things have come together; this time, it's Mass Effect and anime. Thank you, God.
  • woot!!!

  • This seems interesting to say the least, but I don't know how well I'll like it.

  • Wow, that's some exciting news.

  • Does this mean ME3 won't be out this year?

  • I wonder if it will take place after the events of ME3, during the ME games, or even before the first one.
  • Anime Mass Effect huh... this sounds to me like something that has a lot more potential to fail than succeed :( However, if handled well it could be amazing...

  • NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111
