Nintendo Moves 1.5 Million Hardware Units Black Friday Week

Surprisingly, Black Friday sales have evidenced that there are still a handful of people in the U.S. who don’t own a Nintendo DS or Wii. And when we say a handful, we mean 1.5 million people.

According to internal estimates, Nintendo sold 900,000 DS units and 600,000 Wii units the week of November 21-27. New bundles celebrating the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. undoubtedly helped to bolster sales.

  • Interesting, I guess it must be the pricing. Nintendo systems are already pretty cheap, so a black friday deal where you could get a Wii for like 50 dollars or a DS for even less would probably be pretty attractive. Speaking of which, who thinks the title of this article will inevitably attract that spambot that's been floating around?
  • There was some really amazing deals on the DS and Wii this last weekend. I felt obligated to buy 2 of the $89 DS Lites from Walmart. I'm sure I have at least two nephews or nieces who can enjoy them and the price was right.
  • I worked at Gamestop on Black Friday and I think our store sold about 80 or 90 ds systems alone so I am not that surprised.

  • Let's be honest here; is anyone really surprised when Nintendo does well during holidays? Nintendo is synonymous with family-friendly fun and has been ever since the NES. Nintendo makes fantastic, accessible systems that deserve all the attention and praise they get. Glad to see them doing well with yet-another black friday gone by.
  • One step closer to a new Nintendo system, apparently.
  • I still know many people who do not own a single Nintendo system, so the fact that they moved 1.5 million DS's/Wii's isn't all that surprising. The price cuts and changes were enough to urge people to buy their hardware this time around, it seems.

  • That's pretty incredible. I'm sure that number will grow significantly between now and Christmas, too.

  • I would have to say the number of DS numbers sold is mighty *** impressive

  • 2yrs later next-gen might be release.. then those people going to tell them-self, darn we should have waited.. BTW just taken a guess when next-gen going to be release =p

  • That's too bad. Another foot in the grave for non-casual gamers.

  • I know all the GI staff picked up that DS bundle in the pic just so they can play Mario Party!!!! LMAO!!
  • I'm on of the ones who STILL don't have either. Woot

  • You have to also factor in people "upgrading" to the DSi or DS Lite even. Until this year, I was still using my 1st Gen blue DS I had purchased years ago. Now people are seeing price drops and are taking advantage of it by purchasing a newer model of the system.

  • And I am proud to say i am one of those 1.5 million to buy a special edition red wii. Don't care what anyone says, it was well worth it.

  • well i dont think that's entirely true, i have a wii and i bought another one on black friday, cause it was cheap, and i can have the old one in the living room

  • i sold a couple of those! the new colors were pretty cool, but Mario Party on the DS wasn't a great game, i don't think.

  • This year was such a good year for the Wii with: Galaxy 2, Donkey Kong, Sin and Punishment 2, Kirby, No More Heroes 2, Tatsunoku v Capcom, Cave Story for WiiWare etc.

Too bad the DS is dying a slow painful demise for a system as big as it is. Piracy is to blame. Can't wait for more 3DS details. I really hope they have a better plan for combatting piracy this time around so the good games like we see at launch will continue throughout the system's life.

  • I bought the dsi with mario party for only $150 at gamestop, and also came with fossil fighters.

  • Mod

Of course. I waited in line with a woman who was probably in her 50's at gamestop at 2:00 am. She had never been to any kind of gamestore, and all she wanted was a black wii.

Black friday deal's bring out even the casual gamer's. :)
