Reader Discussion: What Will Be This Holiday's Top-Selling Game?

by Phil Kollar on Oct 16, 2010 at 08:05 AM

So September NPD results came out this week, and (unsurprisingly) Halo Reach was the big winner. But that got me thinking: We're just now hitting the weeks of huge holiday releases. Of all the gigantic triple-A games coming out in the next few months, what do you think will end up being the best-selling?

Call of Duty: Black Ops is a fairly obvious (if safe) choice, unless you think this week's Medal of Honor will go against all odds to take the top spot. Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood also promises to draw in a big fan following. On the RPG side, Fable III and Fallout: New Vegas are both sure to pull in a lot of players.

Music fanatics have new Guitar Hero, Rock Band, and DJ Hero games to choose between, splitting that market a bit. Maybe the winner will be something unexpected and more family-friendly like Donkey Kong Country Returns, Epic Mickey, or Kirby's Epic Yarn. Or perhaps the latest Need For Speed or Harry Potter games will draw the biggest audience.

And hey, let's not forget the upcoming third expansion for World of Warcraft, Cataclysm. Blizzard has an army of 12 million potential buyers, so they're likely to make a dent of some sort in the charts.

So what do you think? Are there any major contenders I missed? Does anyone have a hope of besting Call of Duty this year? What do you think will be the top-selling game of 2010's holiday season?
