Cutting Room Floor: Final Fantasy XIII DLC

According to Final Fantasy XIII director Motomu Toriyama, the end of Final Fantasy XIII wasn’t the intended final content. In an interview with Famitsu, Toriyama touched on what happened to DLC previously touted, when he was quoted instructing gamers to “hold onto their saves” for new content down the line.

“We were planning to make some DLC, but that plan wound up not happening,” said Toriyama. “I'm sorry!”

The apology doesn’t offer much insight, but at least puts closure on the matter if you were still waiting with bated breath. We would have been interested in seeing how Square Enix approached post-launch support – a first for Final Fantasy outside the continued maintenance of Final Fantasy XI.

How about you? Would you have liked some fresh content for XIII? If so, what characters or plot points do you think should have been expanded?

  • I don't care much for FFXIII anyway, so I'm fine without any DLC

  • That game's gambit system annoyed me. I won't ever finish the game because I can't stand the combat system. I'd rather play thru XII again before putting XIII back in my console.

  • I didn't even bother to beat the game, it was so horrible. Why would I care for dlc?

  • The game was long enough as it is no new dlc needed.

  • I liked the ending just fine. I think if they were to make DLC, it should have been to play through Fang / Vanille's backstory. That's about it, though.

  • I just beat this game recently and was kind of disappointed at the ending. I expected more out of it from how the story was describing what was gonna happen. The game needs the DLC. The ending just wasn't enough for the story that they were building up.

  • free roam lol

  • I mean, I guess I'll disagree with everyone else who's posted so far in saying that I thought the game was very intelligently crafted, and I would have loved to see more from the title.  I would have liked to see the characters exploring more of this brave new world of Pulse, since it's their home now.  It would have been cool to see them playing through missions to help establish cities or towns or outposts on the planet.  Or, as someone else mentioned, having the chance to play through Fang and Vanille's portion of the story before the beginning of the game would be cool, so we could see their exploits 500 years ago, which led to their being put into crystal stasis in the Vestige.

  • some prologue type dlc would've been cool. maybe play as Fang and Vanille's before the events of ffxiii. idk though, i wasn't super taken with ffxiii, so i may not have gotten it.

  • It would have been interesting to see how they could've expanded the story, but then again, the only character whose plotline wasn't worthless was Sazh. Oh well, then.

  • Yea, I got about 10 hours in and just lost all interest... perhaps because I had other games I was interested in at the time, but I think because it just wasn't compelling. Love love love the art direction, and the combat was pretty engaging (for short periods of time anyway) but the dialog and character development was just horrible : /

  • First FF game that I couldn't bring myself to finish. Looked great but it just didn't connect with me for whatever reason. Also I know it's been said and debated over and over, but it was just too much by the rails for my taste.

  • I don't know about DLC, but they really needed to patch up the Paradigm Shifts. I can't count how many times I died because the game felt the need to show me ALL of my characters changing class ONE BY ONE. Really Square-Enix. Just show it once. I'll assume it happened for everyone. XD

Seriously though, I don't think FFXIII would really benefit from any DLC unless they released a prologue or a costume pack.

  • Honestly I don't thnk RPG's really need DLC. The main point of an RPG is the story, and all of it should be on the disc itself.

I like map packs for online multiplayer, although I'm not always happy with the price; and I loved Mass Effect and Dragon Age, but I've no desire to purchase the available DLC for either.

  • Staff

I would have liked anything to wash the awful taste of that game's ending from my mouth.

  • That's too bad, really. I would have loved to see more involving Fang & Vanille in DLC, however that may have been.

And what's with all the Final Fantasy XIII bashing? Considering it sold like hot cakes I think the only people commenting here are the people who can find nothing to do but gripe about it. It was a good game.

  • I only get to play a max of one hour a week so this game has been in and out of my ps3 as time permits, its more of a loyalty thing to finish it though, good game... not a great game...

The DlC (i have not finished it) for me would have to be more of a final fantasy 7 thing with the extra bosses and cool otherwordly weapons that i have not heard this game have...  if they are there then excuse me for my ignorance.. i am a gamer, but life has me occupied taking care of my family... (my son though is passing everything he gets... even some of my old games!)

  • What about the omega weapon (boss)? That be pretty sweet dlc along with being able to learn ultima.

Btw the game was better then ffXII but worse then ffX and lower.

  • If the DLC made the characters less whiny, more mature, and it made the story make some sense, then yes, I would probably buy it.

On, second thought, I probably still wouldn't buy it. A good story and characters with realistic motivations should be expected out of the box.

/Really annoyed me that they were always whining after a boss fight. You just kicked the bosses ass! You should be celebrating!

  • I wouldn't want to buy DLC for an awful game like that!
