Square Enix Enters Extreme Territory

In an interesting bit of news from abroad, developer/publisher Square Enix has opted to create a new games label in Japan to clearly brand mature titles as such. Although best known for their RPGs, Square Enix isn’t foreign to publishing mature titles, including Western hits such as Modern Warfare 2 which it localized for the Japanese audience.

Square Enix President and CEO Yoichi Wada introduced the Extreme Edges label in the newest issue of Famitsu. The moniker will be slapped on any Western product that boasts excessive violence and is rated Cero D (17+) or Cero Z (AO equivalent). The move will make even clearer that violent content is part of the package deal, helpful for consumers who don’t follow Western development.

Considering Eidos (and subsequent studios like IO Interactive) are now part of the Square Enix family, we expect the Extreme Edges label will be used sooner rather than later – especially with Kane & Lynch on the docket.
