Why Dishonored Is One Of The Best Games Of 2012

A wild swing away from the sequelitis that dominated 2012, Dishonored from Arkane Studios and Bethesda empowered players with an alluring combinations of tactics, powers, and tools. This new IP was featured as our cover story from August 2011 (click here to enter the content-filled hub from our studio visit) and it had a couple of editors fighting for it to be named as the Game of the Year.

Watch the video below to watch Game Informer's Andrew Reiner and Matt Bertz talk about their experience with Dishonored and what made it stand out in a year of excellent releases.

For another discussion focusing on the ending of the game, check out our episode of Spoiled featuring Andy McNamara.

  • this game was not that great in my own opinion, just thought the world was to much of a drag and the story didn't make any sense, but the gameplay was pretty interesting. i will admit that it was really fun to play as the protagonist, he was pretty beast!
  • YEAH whatever.....
  • I loved this game-the art, the gameplay, the characters, and the mask...everything was so awesome.
  • I just couldn't get into this one. The narrative wasn't interesting enough to hold me, and the game never really gave me the incentive that, say, Hitman gave me to take the stealth approach over the run-and-gun appproach during missions. It would have made a better rental.
  • This game, in my opinion, should have been game of the year.
  • I thought Reiner's game of the year was ME3, but I couldn't get into the story of dishonored. Excellent example of how not to do a silent protagonist Am I the only one who like Hitman absolution more than this? I thought that game had much more replayability, better no lethality, and much better stealth components. While dishonored's best way to play the game was stealth with action, which had tons of upgrades. Yet the non-lethal which was the way better ending, made it harder, a ton less upgrades, and so much more boring and awesome moments
  • This is a game that I was anticipating as soon as I first heard of it. I pre-ordered it, played it for a few nights, and sadly have not touched it sense. Don't get me wrong, so far what I have played of this game I love! Just with everything else going on in my life I have sadly had to put video games on the back burner for a little while. I can not wait to get back into this game and finish it!

  • I swore not to buy this till it had dropped 20$. It's killing me.
  • one of the best games

  • A good game, hopefully some stuff can get worked out for a sequel.

  • Dishonored is a great game. I'm glad Arkane Studios sold enough copies to be satisfied. They deserve it for making a game like that. Mass Effect 3 is my GOTY though. There was no other game that I was more emotionally attached to than that.
  • Ive played dishonored twice now and find that while the action path is very cool, the stealthy path is way more rewarding, not just because it has the "better" ending but because it makes you feel like a real assassin instead of a plain out killer. Different strokes...

  • Very true, i started to play recently and i gotta say, it's awesome.

  • Great feature! I absolutely adored this game. It is one of my top 5 games of the year. The gameplay was fantastic, the story very alluring, and the setting was very beautiful.

  • My game of the year.

  • Yesss, I loved this game! I went high chaos and this game was great for the completionist in me, I tried to make sure I collected everything and beat all the side missions I could. I'm looking forward to revisiting the game in a couple months, this time trying to be a bit more stealthy!

  • The gameplay alone was enough for a sequel, but Dishonored offers a great, new world to explore as well as an awesome graphical style.  It is by far my game of the year, but I will admit that I didn't play Mass Effect 3 or XCOM: Enemy Unknown.

  • Picked my copy up on Black Friday and its currently sitting under my tree. I can't wait to play it.
  • Never played this game but it's high on my games-I-want-now list.

  • Absolutely loved this game. Very interesting world, characters, and story. The gameplay is also awesome, and I might play through the game again because I missed out on so much content (being stealthy and not killing anyone leaves a lot missed out). I'm honestly debating with myself whether this is my GOTY or Halo 4. Decisions...
