Insomniac's Giant Leap: Developing Disruptor And Spyro The Dragon

We were more than happy to talk to Insomniac's CEO about their upcoming game called Fuse, but we couldn't help ourselves from diving into the studio's outstanding earlier games. There's a lot of stellar ground to cover, but we narrowed it down to Insomniac's leap from their first game Disruptor to the original Spyro the Dragon.

Watch the video below to learn how CEO Ted Price and a small development team built the company, learned the perils of live-action videos, and how the team's obsession with Super Mario 64 informed the design of Spyro the Dragon. I hope you enjoy the video.

  • I miss the PSOne Spyro's. I still have my copies. God, what happened to him? He's a cash cow instead of a great platforming dragon.
  • Awesome video. I love to see the developer's point of view, definitely a side of the industry I'm always interested in :)

  • Spyro! Spyro! Spyro!

  • I love the first Spyro game so much, it was so amazing at the time of its release.

  • insomniac made without a doubt the best Spyro EVER!!  They need to make another spyro game!!

  • Yeah, Spyro was awesome. I play It now and then, and it's still awesome.

  • Apparently I am alot like Ted Price because my first game was also Doom and Spyro is one of my favorite characters. Also I played pokemon, but that was in 1998.

  • Dear man in the video.. if u are reading this. Remake Spyro and Crash the way they used to be on the PSOne. u will forever be my idol
  • .....I want a new Spyro game....and none of that Skylander stuff!
  • Spyro is easily my favorite gaming icon of all time. Spyro 3 was my favorite Spyro game.
  • Spyro,Crash,Tomba,Metal Gear Solid and Syphon Filter 2 were my favorite PSone games...sometimes I feel that modern games don't have the personality of the old ones, but that could just be the nostalgia talking...
  • The first two Spyro games are timeless imo. I loved everything about them, the level design, the voice acting, the music ( god the music is so good) bosses were enjoyable. The first one is very nostalgic for me but i think Ripto's Rage really hit that sweet spot for me!
  • Ted Price is a hottie.

  • Spyro the Dragon is one of my fondest early childhood memory. I wish Insomniac still had the franchise and release some crazy Spyro HD collection!

  • Spyro was the first console game I played, and it was my childhood. Loved it!
  • Loved playing the first three Spyros.

  • I think the second spyro was my favorite because I collected every gem and got the fire ball upgrade in the amusement park at the end.  Plus the levels were my favorite too

  • Sony only has Naughty Dog & Santa Monica Studios left,my how the mighty have fallen on hard times
  • Spyro was one of my favorite games growing up. I loved the third one, I wish he would go back to that instead of this skylanders stuff.
