Ted Price Discusses The Evolution Of Fuse And Fan Feedback

You might remember seeing a trailer for a game called Overstrike at EA's press conference over a year ago, but the team at Insomniac Games remained quiet about the mysterious title until last month. The game has been renamed Fuse and leaves the campy 70s vibe on display in the original trailer behind for a more "realistic" and darker tone.

While visiting the studio for our cover story, I sat down with CEO Ted Price to talk about the original idea for the game, what makes the co-op unique, and what fans have been saying about the change in direction.

  • I want the Fuse cover. It looks good. I don't remember what the original direction was though.
  • In my opinion the game lost it's identity when it went from a satirical environment to another military shooter. I'm not sure what fan feedback they're listening to, but I'm not a fan of it :/
  • I love Insomniac Games and I still have yet to be let down by them. Sure they removed the original trailer idea, but that was because the weapons and story became more dark as they created more. I know that they are going to keep the humor in, but its going to be more like portal from what I heard.

Great job Ben, I really appreciate these types of videos/features.  I am excited for Fuse, but I am sad to see the direction change from what was Overstrike.

  • It seems to me that Insomniac took the easy way out. If they were to make Overstrike, the development process would require much more creativity and a lot more hard work. This would have payed off with a truly unique title though. Now what they have done, is take the easy way out and choose to have a typical art style that would require less creativity and effort. As a result, looking at the new trailer, the title has lost its unique identity and blends in with other military shooters. It disappoints me to see the old trailer compared to the new, current one.
  • It really is a shame that EA took a fun, cartoonish team based game and it turned it into "MERIKA *** YEAH BROWN AND BLOOM NO COLORS" simulator
  • I like both ideas, but I understand where Ted is coming from. The game looks really good. I just hope the light heartedness and fun story are kept intact for the more realistic grounded game. Cant wait for more.

  • I was really interested in Overstrike, it looked really creative. Fuse looks bland and generic. Count me out, I'll be in the games that have a soul, and color.

  • I guess I like "campy", way to lose my purchase insomniac.
  • "Fan Feeback," aka, "CoD Sells Loads of Copies, so Why Not?"
  • Sorry but I read all this as "we're developing a game for Xbox 360 now too which is a the popular system for CoD/Other Generic Military FPS fans so let's change the wackyness of what he had and make it as generic of a military FPS game as  possible."

  • I love Insomniacs' brand of humor and i was really worried it was going to absent from this game. Ted seemed to reassure me a bit there. Anyway i dont own a PS3 so i havent been able to play any of their games for a while, which is why im super excited for this being multi-platform.

  • Translation we realized we screwed up and we would love to go back but too much money and time has been spent for us to go back and change things.

  • It wasn't campy, it was funny. Why change that? U weren't doing bad things to bad guys? Why did i see broken necks and bullet riddled enemies? How many dry humour co-op shooters are there in the market atm....freaking loads. How many like overstrike? None.
  • I have to admit that while Fuse may not be a bad decision, Overstrike has a feel that is similar to Ratchet and Clank, in terms of crazy weapons and a cartoon style, that makes it approachable for many gamers. I am definitely interested to see a level of Overstrike shown to explain the problem with the original gameplay.
  • So they did the opposite than the first Borderlands. If you remember, the first was more realistic and gritty, but then they changed it to cel-shaded graphics.

  • Interesting that an animated art style somehow held back your ability to be violent, Mr. Price, considering Valve seemed to be able to pull that off just fine. Seriously, I don't care if they had still changed the name, the whole tone of the game went from whacky action that allowed for Bulletstorm level insanity to now being pretty much "Insomniac wants to make the mistakes it did with Resistance" i.e. make lots of interesting weapons and probably some neat boss fights but lacking probably in every other area.

Insomniac, listen to me. You guys are brilliant at getting away with things under the T-rating. Half the dialogue in Rachet: Deadlocked that I've heard so far is full of references and wit that only Pixar normally could pull off. And the weapons were certainly not held back in any of those games, so what do you plan on doing? Firing darts of acid that go into X-ray vision that slowly dissolve a man's naughty bits? I want to genuinely hear the designers explain what was so hindered by having a unique direction for a game that was so impressive I even knew non-gamers who found it appealing.

Also, am I correct in hearing from some other sources that the main characters barely tolerate each other now? So it's going to be like Syndicate with all the co-op protagonists who screamed insults at each other before the missions began? Do we need -that- again? I was looking for camp humor, not dry humor. Dry humor is everywhere, even in things that are claiming they are campy.

Just be straight with us, show us what in particular was so necessary that you had to change the entire game's design at a fundamental level just to allow it. Because right now, you're making a hell of a risk that's got a high chance of blowing up in your faces!
  • I was excited for Overstrike, it had that cartoony feel that is rarely seen in games and reminded me of Ratchet and Clank, it was over-the-top and goofy about it. Fuse looks like they wanted to make a shooter, so they scrapped the unique art style, got rid of the over-the-topness and traded it for (I'm quoting him here) a "drier" humor (since when do you want dry jokes?). What I'm getting from Insomniac is that they liked Resistance, but since it wasn't as great as they thought it was, they're going to try again. I wish they wouldn't, they should go back and do cartoony, silly games like Spyro and Ratchet and Clank. Just because Naughty Dog successfully went from cartoony platformer to serious shooter doesn't mean you can.
  • I'll still get the game.
