Replay – Donkey Kong 64

Last week on Replay, the gang got into a heated argument that involved Banjo Kazooie, Super Mario 64, and 3D platforming in general. One of the titles that came up was Rare's Donkey Kong 64, which received decidedly mixed reactions upon its release. Thirteen years later, we decided to throw it into the Nintendo 64 to see how it holds up.

Watch below to see Tim Turi, Ben Hanson, Andrew Reiner, and myself continue our discussion about the era's platformers.

  • The afro ape is the best!

  • Yes I was so excited when they talked about checking this one out in last weeks Replay. Bring it on!
  • Donkey Kong is one of the only reasons I would purchase a nintendo console. (other 2 being zelda/mario)
  • Yes! Now since GI is on a 3D Platforming spree, do Crash 3.
  • This game is not good.

I actually played it back in March, when I was at a friend's house before heading out to PAX East. He has all of his consoles hooked up to various tv's throughout his apartment, and so we checked out some old N64 games. DK64 was one of the games we played.

Parts of it are quite good, and it looks pretty solid (although the framerate blows). We had a blast on the railcart sections in some levels, and the boss fights, for instance. But the actual platforming is so bland - there's very little of that fast paced, reflex-driven, "jump, jump, duck" kind of stuff like in Donkey Kong Country - and the collectibles are out of control; it's just a bland game all around. Although it's insane, so points for that. We had trouble remembering the controls, because Rare had a penchant for button combos back then. Holding R and C-Down does one thing, pulling back on the stick and holding B and hitting C-Right does another - madness like that. We kept throwing oranges (grenades) when we didn't want to, or busting out guitars for musical solo moves (!?!) - there's way too much going on here, and very little of it is worthwhile. Definitely Rare's most out of control, most overproduced, game of all time. Which is weird because it's sandwiched between two much better games from them; Jet Force Gemini and Perfect Dark.

The multiplayer modes are the worst here in DK64 too:) But, like, hilariously bad. Who demanded multiplayer deathmatch in a Donkey Kong platformer? That's like developers today who stuff that crud into great single player games, but at least in Uncharted it makes more sense and was pulled off much better. This? This is madness. DK64 is an interesting game to look back on, that's for sure. But it ain't good.

Retro Studios needs to do a proper 3D Donkey Kong. A true exploration based platformer, like how Rare used to do and very few studios still do. I mean, Epic Mickey and Sly Cooper are basically it. Sonic and Mario have gone back to pretty linear level designs, y'know?
  • This game basically sums up my childhood...Spent so many hours (weeks maybe) just playing this.

I always just ran around and died haha

  • Sweet replay

  • I think I need to dig up my N64. It's time to KICK SOME TAIL!

  • YESSSS!!!! I loved this game when I was a kid! Great memories! I loved the castle level and its boss.

  • I remember playing this back in the day. I never actually finished it because the world was too huge and there were too many things to find.

  • Holy crap! How far does the landscape go?

  • What shocked me most about DKCR on Wii was that DK was 2D in that. The animation was so good I thought it was a 3D model.
  • Mod

Best Replay game so far! Can't wait to watch it.

  • Please get it up on YouTube soon. I can't stand watching it on the GI video player.. but I'm excited to watch.

  • Ha, the end of that Roulette was hilarious! Why would they let you do that?

  • Another great game of my childhood! Such fond memories of this, especially the intro song lol.

  • Yay!

  • Bout time!! Man,I put so many hours into this game as a kid.

  • Oh man, i remember playing this game all the time at a friends house and loving it at the time.

  • Now I want to see a real ape in an afro and disco suit...
