The lights are on
Besides the so-so Contra: Hard Corps, Sega fans couldn't play any entry from Konami's awesome shooter series on the Genesis. Fortunately, the spectacular Treasure title, Gunstar Heroes, hit the Genesis in full force. The co-op run and gun shooter allowed two players to mix and match power-ups in the age-old quest to kill everything onscreen.
This week we're joined by Brent Weinbach, comedian, host of The Legacy Music Hour, and friend of Replay. Brent previously joined us for a look back at Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse, and he's back to play Gunstar Heroes with Ben Reeves, Kyle Hilliard, and myself.

Gotta' love Treasure's little Megadrive gems like Gunstar, Dynamite Headdy and Alien Soldier :D
These guys probably would've done quite a lot better if they learnt how to use the slide though :)
BEETLE ADVENTURE RACING!!! WOOOO!
I find Gunstar Heroes overrated, so seeing the UNDER-rated racing adventure is a nice balance. One of the coolest driving games ever; Paradigm designed levels more like a platformer almost. This was a great era in racing games - Rush 2049, Diddy Kong Racing and this game ALL brought more exploration elements to racers, something that NOBODY does anymore. Great game to take a look at. I wish someone would make another racer like this. GOOD PICK, BRENT!
Please tell me more about these "Shortcuts" I never heard of them.
Awesome Replay! I has so much fun playing both Gunstar Heroes and Beatle Racing years ago.
Well this was rather funny.
I'm surprised Kyle didn't pick the minivan.
YES, Beetle Adventure Racing! I rented that game all the damn time when I was like 9, played it to death. I totally agree with Brent on this one, great game, awesome shortcuts.
YESYESYESYESYES. One of my favorite games as a kid.
I remember playing the beetle game! Good times! It's all about beetle battle mode!
Beetle game actually looks really cool.
Gunstar Heroes is awesome, and the Beetle game actually looks really awesome too. Brent's a pretty cool replay guest, look forward to seeing him on another episode!
Wow, lots of d-bags in the comments who either can't handle people with different opinions from them, or can't handle people who enjoy older stuff more than current gen. I hope Brent comes back for more Replays.
To answer the Beetle question, that was one of the games in my library that I would play constantly. It was in my rotation of that Paper Mario and Majora's Mask. I absolutely loved that game so much fun and a T-Rex makes a cameo in a level.
Treasure games are always great.
I loved playing beetle bug racing with my sister as a kid. My favorite level was the UFO track ;)
so many shortcuts! that pink car sure did cheat. and gunstar heros was awesome! i'd love to play it on my Vita, SONY! you hear that? more games would be nice!
I never got a chance to play Gunstar Heroes because I was a Nintendo kid, but I remember renting Beetle Adventure Racing and enjoying it quite fondly. I have to agree with Brent about the shortcuts. They are what make that game fun.
Brent would be way cooler if somebody aggressively hosted/directed the conversation (Dan or Reiner.) Letting him guide the show was pretty dull, but it's good to get somebody to point out different focal points than normal (big fuss over shortcuts and music, for example.)
F that beetle game though, man. The hardware of the n64 just spoils it. I couldn't see a damn thing.
Gunstar Heroes is a classic!!!! Great choice for replay
