Smashed: The Guinness Marathon Documentary (Five Years Later)

by Ben Hanson on Mar 18, 2016 at 01:01 PM

Five years ago this weekend, four Game Informer editors went for the Guinness World Record by playing an unhealthy amount of Super Smash Bros. Brawl. On the anniversary, we thought it would be fun to resurface this documentary to see how much things have changed (and how much hasn't) in the last five years. If you enjoy these marathons, we do them for charity now so check out the archive of our 2015 Extra Life stream. We hope you enjoy the video!

Original Story: When Dan first told me that he was planning an attempt to claim the Guinness world record for longest fighting game marathon, I knew that we needed to set up a live stream so that fans could follow along and interact with the Game Informer crew that consisted of Dan Ryckert, Jeff Cork, Tim Turi, and Ben Reeves. But at a certain point I got the itch to do a little bit more. As a fan of Smash Bros. and stupid stunts in general, I thought that it would be a good idea to utilize our two HD cameras and capture some of the insanity on tape so that I could cut together a quick highlight reel. Well, much like the history of Volition video, things quickly spiraled out of control. Hundreds of gigabytes of footage later I realized that I had a full documentary on my hands. I apologize that it took so long (the attempt occurred in March) but I hope that you enjoy this all-encompassing look at what happens when four video game magazine editors attempt to break a Guinness world record by playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl for over 27 consecutive hours.
