The Pro Evolution series has always delivered strategic gameplay, and the new Combination Play feature will make you a general on the pitch.

Combination Play refers to set strategies you can set up to trigger on specific parts of the field involving three or more players. Three strategies are defaulted to each team, but you can change which ones you use at any point during a game (through the Game Plan menu option) and select from a list of 14.

In my brief time trying them out in an early build of the game, combination plays were easy to create and use. Perhaps more importantly, they were a natural part of the game. They weren't so powerful that they broke the balance of the gameplay, and players would only make their designated runs if they were in the correct position to begin with.

Combination Play Strategies:

  • Hold Up the Ball
  • Diagonal Run
  • Cut Inside
  • Diagonal Dribble
  • Hold Up and Overlap
  • Straight Run
  • Hold Up and Switch
  • Overlap and Pull Back
  • Drop Deep and Overlap
  • Dummy Run and Cross
  • Cross and Pull Back
  • Cross and Dummy
  • Switch Flanks
  • Dummy and Lay Off

The video below shows you how to set up and execute these strategies.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 comes out for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC on September 24. For more on the game, click here.
