Creators Update Bringing Better Broadcasting, Audio Improvements, And Tournaments To Windows 10 Gaming

by Kyle Hilliard on Oct 26, 2016 at 09:04 AM

The Creators Update, which adds a number of new features to Windows 10, is coming this spring, and with it come a few goodies for Windows gaming.

Game broadcasting is getting a big improvement with the inclusion of Beam. Beam is popular interactive live streaming software, and it will be integrated directly into Windows 10 gaming. A quick key press will bring up a bar, which has a number of buttons built-in, like 'start broadcast,' which will alert your followers you are streaming. It will also place a small window on screen showing your stream and your chat window.

Custom tournaments are also coming to Windows 10. Players will be able to pick games, set tournament types and styles, set the time the tournament will be taking place, and send out invites all from one window. It will also track all the affiliated stats of the tournament for you. Where applicable, Xbox One players and Windows 10 players will be able to participate in tournaments together. Microsoft used Killer Instinct as an example on stage at its Windows 10 Event.

Finally, Microsoft said on stage, "Bit Stream audio passthrough including Dolby Atmos support is coming with the Creators Update to Blu-Rays on Xbox One S," which is good news for the audiophiles out there.

Our Take
All these features are good inclusions. The audio announcement doesn't mean much to me (I'm happy with my lame old sound bar), but I can't help but feel like its a small jab at Sony's PlayStation 4 Pro, which has significantly de-prioritized Blu-Ray compatibility and 4K movies for its next console.
