Report: EA Shakes Up Leadership As Andrew Wilson Steps Into CEO Role

by Mike Futter on Sep 24, 2013 at 07:28 AM

Reports are coming in that there are some significant changes in responsibility at the top of EA's organizational structure following the appointment of Andrew Wilson as CEO. The move sees new roles for Frank Gibeau and Patrick Söderlund.

Polygon is reporting that Gibeau, who up until now served as president of EA Labels (EA Games, EA Sports, BioWare, Maxis) will be taking over EA's Mobile initiatives. Additionally, Polygon cites a single source as indicating Gibeau's responsibilities expanding to include the Origin digital distribution platform.

Söderlund will be elevated from executive vice president of EA Labels to head of EA Sports (the role vacated by Wilson). We've reached out to EA for clarification on the new roles and any other shifts.

Our Take
With a new chief executive comes change, and this is a lot of shakeup. It's very unclear whether Gibeau's job is changing or just expanding. Söderlund has been a tireless advocate for Battlefield (even going a bit too far in comparing his project to Activision's Call of Duty).

What this might mean, if anything for Peter Moore, has us most interested. Many expected he would be the strongest internal candidate for CEO, which might mean that he wasn't interested in the job.
