The Long Dark Aims To Deliver A True Survival Experience

by Kyle Hilliard on Sep 17, 2013 at 03:33 PM

With an impressive team of veteran game designers at the helm, Hinterland aims to deliver a mature, realistic survival experience with The Long Dark.

The game is currently accepting pledges on its Kickstarter to create the game. The team has a huge resume of work on well-respected video games including Dawn of War, Company of Heroes, Far Cry 3, Red Faction, Saint's Row, God of War, League of Legends, The Unfinished Swan, Baldur's Gate II, Jade Empire, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect, and more.

The Long Dark takes place in the Northern Wilderness in a world where pilot William Mackenzie must learn how to survive in a post-apocalyptic world after crashing his plane. There are no electronics or electricity, and other survivors pose just as much of a threat, if not more, than the local wildlife.

You can find out more about the game on its Kickstarter page which offers more details on the game's mechanics and plot, as well as interviews with the small team of developers. With 28 days to go, The Long Dark has earned just over $39,000 of its $200,000 goal.

Our Take
It is certainly an ambitious project for such a small team, but it sounds like it could lead to an engrossing experience. In some ways, it looks to be reminiscent of The Last of Us, but without zombies (or Cordyceps if you prefer). I'm definitely curious to learn more about the game.
