EA Founder Trip Hawkins Responds to Madden Programmer's Lawsuit
Programmer Robin Antonick worked on the original Madden NFL title for Electronic Arts back in the 1980s, and now he's filed a lawsuit claiming that EA owes him millions. Then co-worker and EA founder Trip Hawkins disagrees, saying Antonick was "one of many" people working on the game.
In an interview with the L.A. Times, Hawkins downplays Antonick's role in the game in various ways from saying the game was an overall team effort to disputing Antonick's claim that he and Hawkins sat next to each other. Hawkins says that Antonick was a remote contractor who worked from his home in Chicago, and that after his work on the 8-bit versions of the game, Antonick wasn't recommissioned for the 16-bit versions since those efforts required a programmer with "more advanced" skills.
We don't know if it's going to be easy or hard for a court to assess Antonick's role in Madden's development, and we smell an out-of-court settlement in the works, but we'll see.
